wreck for which Voorhees is convicted

senger McNorton and the serious injury
of Engineer Alex. Stewart and Conduc
tor Lyman. Voorhees was formerly a
B. & M. brakemau , living at Lincoln ,
and being discharged , perpetrated his
fiendish act out of spite. He justly
deserves the severe penalty.

THE senatorial contest in Illinois as
sumes an aspect of almost national im
portance , as upon the selection of a
democrat or republican uiay be based

gain two senators in the 49th congress-

uation would not be critical , but the
chances are that-in the election to be
made for the 50th congress the repub

Ocean cautions Illinois republicans to-

The Brush Tragedy.

BRUSH , COLO. , Jan. 9 , 1885.On
Wednesday evening Joe McNeal and
brother , Chas. Taylor and some others
had a grand ppree. They undertook to
run tlie town. About the first man tack
led was Frank Jochum , sitting quietly
in the store of Black & Kram. Tailor
entered , looked at Jochum a minute ,
threw him out the door , and hit him on
the head with his revolver , making a
bad gash. He gave himself up , and paid
his fine. Thence he went to the Billiard
Hall and undertook to kill Proprietor
Downs , who escaped him , and caused his
* arrest. While making arrest Constable
Giibcrtson was compelled to shoot him ,
the ball taking effect in the side of his
head , but not seriously wounding him.
At the time of arrest , . Taylor and the
other parties were shooting and howling
in the Billiard Hall. Joe McNeal was
also arrested , having previously shot
Jas. Holland while trying to make the
latter datjpe. McNeal escaped from the
court room while being examined before
Judge Cheadle. and has not been caught.
Taylor is under one thousand dollars
bail to appear at the next term of. Dis
trict Court. He was unable to furnish
bail up to Friday morning. It.is rumored - '
' mored that a former Brushite is at foot
of all the trouble and is giving the
gang all assistance.

caught .McNeal at Uenkelman , Neb. , and
, will have him back at Brush to-night.
PADDY RYAN , Ei-q. , who runs a pal
atial grog shop on South State street ,
Chicago , has gone to New York to

These two gentlemen will hold a lit
tle soiree- which everybody will be
invited ( at § 2 an invite ) and after pmn-
meling each other a little , will return
lo their respective gin factories. This
affair and the movements of the two
honorables will be cluonicled by tele
graph and published in papers all over
the Unitc-d States , and they will gain
all'the glory and shekels they -could

SENATOR DOLAN has introduced a bill
designed to change the present law as to
the population required by villages to
incorporate as a city of the second class.
His amendment to the present law
makes the required number 1,000 in
stead of 1,500. Shall this bill pass ,

second class , which will give us a much

1 The dedication of the Washington
Monument which is soon to precede the
inauguration ceremonies , promises to be
a rather tame affair at best. Mr. Win-
throp's oration has been prepared some
time but the orator will hardly be' able
to deliver it in person , while the propo
sition that Mr. Win throp's son should
read it is far from being satisfactory.
When the corner stone of the Bunker
Hill Monument was laid on the 17th of
June , 1825 , Daniel Webster was the orator
tor , and his magnificent address on that
occasion was inspired'not only by the
presence of LaFayette but by hundreds
of the old veterans of the Revolution
themselves who occupied seats directly
in front of the orator. On the 17th of
June , just eighteen years afterward , the
capstone of the monument was lifted to
its place , and Mr. Webster again deliv
ered the oration , this time with Presi
dent Tyler and his Cabinet among his
auditors , and still hundreds of the Revo
lutionary fathers with open mouths and
hands to their ears , drinking in the sub
lime eloquence of the country's greatest
orator. It was this occasion that brnugh t
forth the familiar quotation : "Vener
able men ! You have come down to us
from a former generation , " &c. , which
was not in Mr. Webster's prepared
speech at all , but was suddenly inspired
by the surroundings and circumstances
of the occassiou. The writer of this ,
though a meic boy , was present on that
occasion and can never forget the scene
presented when these rough old patri
archs wept like children at the thrilling
words of the great orator.
The folly of both houses originating
bills upon the same subject is to be some
what sadly demonstrated in the prospec
tive defeat of both the Cullom bill in the
Senate and the Reagan bill in the House'
which provide for the regulation of interState
ter-State commerce. The Cullom bill
will pass the Senate to-morrow , and the
Reagan bill will pass the House some
day this week. There i.s not much sim
ilarity in the provisions of the two bills ,
so that it i.s not more than likely that
the Seriate will pay the least attention
to the Reagaii measure , than it is prob
able that the House will take notice of
the Cullom production. The upsjiiit of

be reached , au'd the railroads as usml
will come out first best.
So far as the House could accomplish
it , there is to be a Department , of Agri
culture a'nd a Cabinet minister to look
after the beans and potatoes of the coun
try. Is it possible that Congress sup
poses that any Cabinet minister is going
to make a specialty of advancing the ag
ricultural over any other of the many in
terests of this prodigious country ? And
if such a Cabinet minister were disposed j
to make a specialty of playing into the
hands of grangers as the high muck-a
muck of officialism , how long will it be
before the iron interests of Pennsylva
nia , the codfish interests of Massachu
setts , the wooden-nutmeg and brass-
clock interests of Connecticut ; , and the
Saddle Rock oyster interest of Virginia
and Maryland , will be howling for places
in the Cabinet ?
The resident population of Washing
ton have taken it upon themselves to in
augurate Mr. Cleveland in a style entire
ly becoming to the kind of a President
who gets a chance to be inaugurated but
once in a quarter of a century. There
is to be more of a military display per-
iiaps than comports with the Republican
simplicity that we boast of , but what
kind of a demonstration \vould we have
without the blaze of buttons and the
jlare of trumpets ? The ground floor
of the new Pension ' 'Office is to be set }
tpart for Mr. Cleveland's ball , and the !
elegance of the raiment to be worn on
that occasion 1 shall describe to vou as

minutely as I shall possibly dare to.
