I was reading the other day a descrip
tion of female beauty in a book publish
ed iti the seventeenth century Ilere itis :
"TojJie-abSoTute forme of a woman's
face there goes a faire wliite forehead ,
market with no wrinkles or lines , longer
than that of man's is , and drawing to a
roundness about the temples , that it
seems to represent a Turkish bowe in
verted , wherein there appears nut any
tumor or gibbosity , or any cloud , no se
verity or .Sidney , but a pleasant , and
modcbb checifulness , a lace round , plea
sant , and elegant to bch'old. A little
mouth , somewhat or scarce openinga
small white teeth , somewhatshort , in-en ,
and in number ju.st twenty-eight , not
thin , nor too hard-closed togather ; some
what full lips , coral ) , imitating veriuil-
lion , a little disjoyncd , yet so as the teeth
are just discovered while shee holds her
peace or laugheth not , unmoved ; that is
sitch a woman that doth not rest , nor
bite , nor suck her lips : these lips thus
described add a wonderful grace and dig
nity to a woman's visage. Neither is
the nose to be omitted , the honor and
ornament of visage , which represents'
the outward part of a rose , of a mcane
size , strait , cleano , wiih certaine obtuseness -
ness acute , but the holes of the nostrils
small. A round , smooth pill'd , or
smooth chin , the candor whereof seems
to introduce into the' beholder's mind a
certaine suspicion of a rose colour , but no
truiftat all , nor an perception of haire
to be seen , neither on the lips or chin , j
A small , short , purple tongue most certainly - .
tainly doth become a woman , which is
yet scarce or never seen , the tip scarce
appearing while she speaks ; the eyebrows
ought to be black , subtile , disjoyued ,
soft , and sweetly arched. Somewhat ,
black eyes , declining to siuallnesse , con
cave , rolling laughing , pleasant , and'
shining. The bats of the cheeks round"t
aliogathor void of haires , fieshie , rosie ,
nud epembling the red sunshine apples
Dflautuuin. Above these remains the "
temples , which ought to be no less white
than the forehead , and without a suspi- j
3ion of any bones , yet not swollen or de
pressed , but in a manner a little scarce ; ;
jars graven , somewhat short , soft , and :
lelicate , aspersed with the pelucid color (
) t'roses. . The whole head rather little !
; han great , more round than a man's , j
. omely , erect , and elevated. ' * London'

Tun latest sensation connected with
jf
he HiinbiSjSenatorbhip is that the demo-
: rats projfose to buy a republican rep-
c'Sentativu ; who is to receive live thou-
and dollars and resign , thus giving the
Icmocrats a majority of two in the house
nd one in joint session. We would be
uclined to believe the story were it not
or the fact that the dispatch states that
hejdemocrats arc having some difficulty
11 raising the funds , and that some of
heni became so indignunt at the scheme
hat they gave it away to the icpublicans.
t stands to reason that if the democrats
an purchase a republican representa-
ivc lor five thousand dollars they will
ave no trouble in raising the money ,
nd furthermore that it is not natural
or any of them to "give it away. " Bee.
QUITE a business is carried on in
Vashington in the way of selling chips
rom the Washington monument , with
niniature representations of the monument
ment , and 3Jount Vernon painted on the
ouch surface. This industrv will conC -
C-
inue ti flourish so longaa that Maryland
uarryfroui which the monument .stones
anie , holds out. It is estimated that
nough of these bogus souvenirs have
Irt-ady been sold to build another mani i
meut , canal in size to the original.
