Sterling ( Colo. ) News "thinks
that the loss will be largo on the range
on account of the great destruction of
winter feed by fire.
THE turn things have taken , among
prominent Republicans , since the elec
tion , is to be most sincerely regretted
and deprecated. Suffice it to say that
we have been defeated. Let the dead
bury the dead.
EARTHQUAKES are getting shock
ingly common down in New England
this fall , and the people are waxing
very tired. They talk about circulat
ing a monster petition inviting the
mugwumps to go west. They do no
exactly say that the mugwumps cause
the earthquakes , but they yearn to
try the experiment of doing withou
them for a few weeks to see whether
the earth will settle down while they
are absent.
IT is a melancholy reflection that
Dakota gave sixty thousand republi
can majority at the recent election of
a territorial delegate. It shows how
we were beaten in New York and
Indiana , and how we lost strength in
other eastern states. The youngmen
> ry
who have the nerve and enterprise in
the ,01(1 states go west. The lame and
the lazy stay at home and they are all
democrats. If it had not been for
Dakota the republicans would have
swept every northern state. There is
where our "losses" were lost.
IN the heat and hurrah of their first
flush of triumph the democratic and
mugwump free trade journals hasten
ed to extol the value and importance
of the grand free trade victory they
had won , and also spoke despitefully
of Mr. Randall and his wing of the
party. But just suppose for a moment
that they undertake to put some anti-
tariff legislation through congress.
Randall and his crowd will vote with
the republicans as they did before.
Then of coarse they will read the
Randallites out of the party , and deny
them a share of the spoils of victory.
Vere vos dot barty den ? Topics.
ONE brave federal office-holder has
bared his neck fcr the political gullo-
tine. George A. Mott , postmaster of
Pearsall's , L. I. , has written as fol
lows to Governor Cleveland : "Dear
Sir I desire to congratulate you. I
voted against you. I hold the position
of postmaster at Pearsall's , Queene
county , L. I. My place is ready for
a successor. 'To the victors belong
the spoils. ' I hope you.will turn the
rascals out , and if there have been
any frauds committed go for them.
Be president of the nation. God help
you to do right. I am , sir , very re-
spectfully yours. "
THERE ought not to be a moment's
delay in this city , and in the entire
country , in making thorough prepar
ation for a visitation of cholera. It
may not reach our shores , but it is our
duty to assume that it will. If past
history and experience are worth any
thing , the disease is sure to come. It
is not probable , however , that it will
reach us before next spring , and the
intervening months should be devo
ted to preparations to resist its ad
vance. A number of eminent physi
cians of this city in a message to the
secretary of the treasury , in regard to
the importation of rags , have sound
ed the warning. The Mayor and
Health authorities are apparently
alive to the danger. This city should
not repeat the mistake of Paris , in
waiting until the scourge has begun
its work before taking every sanitary
measure possible to keep it out. The
board estimate ought to make a
special appropriation for that purpose.
Already the disease is estimated to
have cost Southern Europe not less
than § 100,000,000. And yet Europe
is only upon the threshold of this epi
demic , if we may judge from the past.
Now iswKe time for this city and
country' 6 take measures to avoid the
suifering and misery which such an
epidemic always leaves in its track.
New York Tribune.
YORK has sent Boston two
loads of beans , and-there is now a
ir
r bond of sympathy between the two
cities.
UNDER ordinary circumstances the
Leman-Brand contest now in progress
in Chicago over a seat in the state sen
ate of Illinois would seem to be a matter
of only ordinary local' interest , but ow
ing to the fact that the Illinois legisla
ture , which is to elect a United States
senator is a tie , and one vote wjll turn
it either way , the contest becomes an
affair of national importance. The coun
ty board of canvassers has decided that
it cannot go behind the returns , and that
the vote will have to stand as returned.
This gives Brand , the democratic con
testant , the certificate and aprhnafacie
claim to his seat. The democrats thus
decure a majority on joint ballot. It is
charged that this is a job put up by the
democrats to steal the legislature of
Illinois , and elect a democrat for United
States senator. It is claimed that the
decision in favor of Brand is based on a
forgery of a tally-sheet , giving to Brand
420 votes in one precinct where he only
actually received 274. The attorney
for Brand lias asserted that his client
will not vote for United States senator
pending the contest over his seat. This
assurance amounts 'to nothing , because
the legislature may compel Brand to
vote. Whether the democrats will be
able to carry out their plan of stealing
the state of Illinois , and thus reducing
the small republican majority in the
United States senate remains to be seen
It may be that the republican governor
will refuse to give certificates to the
man who is elected United States sena
tor if his election depends upon a forg
cry. This at least is the hope of the
republicans , who cannot afford to lose a
member of the United States senate at
this juncture. The end is not yet , anc
we may expect to see a very bitter fight
in the Illinois legislature. The demo
crats , among whom are numerous aspi
rants for the senatorial succession , will
not scruple at anything in order to se
cure that state senator , for upon his
vote the whole matter rests. Bee.
FRANCE thought it had a good joke

from her territory. But now that

Where are the Boys ?
Where are the boys the long even
ings ? "Will their fathers and mothers
take the trouble to know ? Is there a
man in Waukegan or Lake county
mourning over the fact that his boys
are on the down grade morally ! I :
there is we ask what are you doing to
put on the brakes ? What place have
your boys in the home circle ? They
sleep at home ? Yes , perhaps so. Are
you sure about that always ? They
board at home ? Yes. You furnish
them good warm clothing ? Yes
Well , that isn't all a boy needs. What
do you make of home for them that
they couldn't got at a boarding-house ?
You may command a boy to stay al
home evenings , but if you have noth
ing for him to do there ; nothing to
take his time , or nothing buC burdens
and tasks , you make him hate home.
Give him books and papers , and pict
ures , and games , and intelligent nelp
in his tasks and occasional company
at his home. Let nuts and pop corn
and molasses candy have their share
of attention. If home is a better and
pleasanter and more enjoyable plice
than the street the boys will find it
out , and if it's a place to be shunned
they will find that out too. Oh , but
it takes money to buy books and pa
pers and nuts and fruit. Well , it
takes money to buy beer and whisky
and cigars , and to pay fines a little
farther on , and furnish bail-bonds
perhaps , and pay attorneys. It isn't
a question of whether you will invest
your money in your boy's education
and development , but how you will
invest it. In this day of much reform
ing , it will pay fathers and mothers
to see whether they don't need to re
form. Let us have proper restraints
and a prompt and generous treatment
of the boys.'The investment will pay
more than ten per cent. Waukegan
