Thanksgiving Proclamation.
The year now drawing to a close has been
freighted with blessings in abundant measure
to the people of Nebraska.
The conditions that move tne human hear
to thankfulness surround us upon every hand
The glad songs of peace and plenty go u
from tbo happy homes of a prosperous am
contented people.
Thursday , November 27th ,
has been designated by the President of th
United States as a day of National Thanks
giving , and in harmony therewith , I , JAME
W. DAWES , Governor of the State of Nebras
ka , do hereby recommend to the People o
this State that the day so appointed bo observ
cd as a day of Thanksgiving and Prayer t
Almighty God In humble acknowledgment o
His continued mercies.
"Enter Into his gates with thanksgiving , am
into his courts with praise ; bo thankful unt
him and bless his name. "
Let the voice of praise and thank-offering
bo heard from all at the hearthstone alta
of Home , and in the Sanctuary.
If such there bo in your midst , then from
your abundance relieve the wants and gladdei
the hearts of the needy , and the suffering.
'So shall thy barns be filled with plenty , and
thy presses shall burst out with new wine. "
IN WITNESS WHEREOF , I have hereunto se
my hand and caused to bo affixed the Grea
Seal of the State of Nebraska.
Done at Lincoln , this Fifteenth day of Novem
bcr. In the year of our Lord One Thqusanc
Eight Hundred and Eighty Four , of thi
State the Eighteenth , and of the Indcpcnd
enco of the United States the One Hundred
and Ninth. JAMES W. DAWES.
By the Governor ,
EDWARD p. RoaacN ,
Secretary of State.
BRETHREN , if we must have scape
goat upon which to rest the burdei
of our defeat , Jet us be charitable anc
divide the load between the Indepen
dents , St. John and Cook-eyed Ben
DURING the past year more home
stead claims have been taken up in
Nebraska than in any other state
The state has increased wonderfully
in population during the past four
years , having almost doubled in tha
time , and a large portion of this in
crease is made up of farmers. At the
recent election Nebraska cast about
135,000 votes , which shows that her
population is nearly 800,000.
THE little island of Dominica , in
the West Indies group , wants to cut
loose from the British government
and put itself beneath the stars anc
stripes of the United States. The is
land has only 291 square miles , and t
population of 26,000 , consisting most
ly of negroes and French Creoles. Its
legislative assembly has memorialized
the British government to cede the
island to the United States.
Tx view of the fresh outbreak of
cholera in France , Secretary McCul-
loch has issued a circular order in re
lation to the importation of old rags
from infected ports , which modifies
existing orders on that subject so as
to continue the embargo until further
notice and to declare all French and
Mediterranean ports to be infected.
This is eminently proper , and the or
der should be strictly enforced. "We
can better afford to pay a higher price
for papei than to take any chances of
introducing cholera in this country
through imported rags.
BELVA LocmvooD is now known
to have received at least two votes
for president one at "White River
Junction , Vermont , and the other at
Vincennes , Indiana. The voteatVin-
cennes was cast by a lady' and was
received and counted by the board
This is probably the first vote ever
cast by a woman for president. This
ought to be regarded as a glorious
victory for womans suffrage , and the
event ought to be celebrated in a be
coming manner. Bee.
WE believe too much stress is be
ing laid upon.the St. John element in
the election in the Empire state , and
the consequent effect of the same ele
ment in the national result. If Roscoe
Conkling , Carl Schurz , Curtis , and a
host of others had not concluded to
run amuck in this campaign , St. John
would have done but little or no dam
age to the Republican cause. Noth
ing so seriously distracts and endang
ers the life and perpetuity of a gov
ernment , as internal dissensions , and
the same is true , and equally true , as
' .

to party/-James G. Biaiiie , though
heavily handicapped by the active
opposition of many eminent Republi
cans , a few of whom we have named
above , made a grand and character
istic fight , and- received his defeat , of
not so much by reason of the St. John
movement , as of the Independent <
movement.
AT a late meeting of the Social
Sqjunce club in Atchieon , one of the
ladies present made use of the follow
ing language which should be copied
and read all over Christendom. She
said : "Women generally should
learn a lesson from the late political
campaign. The extraordinaiy illog
ical reformer may find that by tread
ing where she does not comprehend
she will make her own ruin. The
women espoused the cause of St. John
Why ? Because they imagined that
by following the lead of a demagogue
they would empty out the whisky anc
close the dram shops. It was not the
wives and mothers who used their in-
fluence'against the interests of a granc
old party , but the extremists the
agonizers. When will women lean
that only steady , patient education
will uplift the nation into the gloriou
light of temperance and morality '
We are sure to merge some time fron
all that is bad and pernicious , but
those who advocate abrupt measures
are millstones about the neck of pro
gress and enlightenment. Let the
women , then , who fasten their for
tunes to the devastating trail of St
John's polluted shirts , take home to
their hearts the sad lesson that such i
course ought to teach. Let us be tern
perate , let us be chaste , but above al
things , do not let us be fools. "
