Washington , D. C. , Nov. 16 , ' 84.
The bare prospect that the Demo-
cruts have succeeded in gaining a vic
tory , has had the effect to bring out
more impossible roosters of stili more
impossible breeds than anybody sup
posed the world possessed , and these
are of every conceivable size , shape ,
line and attitude , depending upon the
zeal and earnestness of the bucolic
editor , who in many cases devotes the
four pages of his newspaper to this
sort of poultry. In this presentation
of the emblems of a decisive political
victory , the exultation of the victors
over a fallen foe find vent in the mock
ing humiliation presented by a'Re
publican rooster who has become
deathly sick and whose stomach re
fuses to retain the obnoxious Mulligan
Letters and other vicious matter
which is presumed to have been the
undoing of one of the Presidential
candidates , while the Democratic
chanticleer , having a Cleveland face ,
is standing upon the prone and pros
trate forms of two other like birds
bearing the semblance of Blaine and
Butler.
The advent of Mr. Cleveland if he
should become the ruling spirit of the
White House , would make only the
scccnti bachelor who has been invest
ed with executive power , in this coun
try , instead of the fourth as some of
the newspapers state. Every Presi
dent down to Mr. Buchanan had been
either a married man or a widower at
the time of accession. Thomas Jeffer
son , Andrew Jackson , Martin Van
Burcn and Mr. Arthur were widowers
when they became President , , while
John Tyler lost his wife and married
again before the expiration of his
term. The wife of Gen. Harrison sur
vived him many years but she never
came to "Washington , having received
tidings of his death just as she was
about to start for the Capital. Dur
ing the General's brief month at the
mansion , his daughter-in-law , Mrs.
Jane Franklin Harrison , did the hon
ors. It was at this time too that Mrs.
Randolph , then a Virginia widow , got
acquainted with the late James
Brooks of the New York Express and
subsequently married him. The wife
of Gen. Taylor though an accomplish
ed lady , was unable to preside at the
Executive Mansion during any portion
tion of the fifteen months of her hus
band's administration. The wife of
President Fillmore lived tnrough his
administration and died at Willards
Sotel only a few days after his suc-
essor , President Pierce was inauga-
ted. ' Mr. Pierce entered the White
House under bereavement , having
Lost a most beloved boy by a railroad
accident in Massachusetts only a few
weeks before. The social life at the
White House during Mr. Pierce's term
was so subdued that no one can be
aid to have been mistress of it , though
several lady friends of Mrs. Pierce
were always on hand to do the honors.
Mrs. Polk was a royal hostess , and ,
next to Mrs. Madison , is remembered
more gratefully than any of the later
mistresses of the mansion. Mrs. John
son was an invalid during the term of
ler husband , but the social affairs of
; he White House were most admira-
managed by Mrs. Patterson and
Mrs. Stover , her daughters , whose af-
: ernoon receptions are a most fragrant
memory. Mr. Cleveland has two sis
ters , either of whom is well fitted to
grace the White House , both having
shown their adaptability in this regard

demands of the Albany social coterie.

SCIENCE has no limits. Experi
ments conducted for several years
under the auspices of John Hopkins'
university have proved that the arti
ficial cultivation of oysters is practi
cable beyond question. The Euro-
Deau oyster increase theory was long
iccepted in America as the true and
only one. . In the Northern European
oyster the eggs are hatched inside the
parent shell and protected until they
ire able to fasten and take care of
ihemselves. It seems this is not the
oyster breeding habit in more south
ern latitudes. The university students
of the American oyster in the regions
round about Maryland find that unfer
tilized oyster eggs are thrown out into
the water , where they are fertilized
and developed without the need of
protection till the } ' grow a shell of
: heir own. Thus it becomes possible
to cultivate oysters in unlimited num-
jers and the oyster raising industry
is about to begin. The university
experiments have been tried on oys
ters in southern Europe with the same
promising results. This new industry
3omes in good time as the old oyster
neds , kept up by the planting method ,
ire rapidly wearing out. The new oys \
ter culture can supply any demand.
