The Tribune F. M.&E. M. KIMMELL , Editors and Publishers. SUBSCRIPTION : $2 PER YEAR . INVARIABLY IN ADVANCE. THE political situation up to the time of our going to press , to-day , u * remains unchanged and undecided. The official canvass of the vote in New York state is not yet complete , or at least no report has been made by the Board of Canvassers , and until the vote in that state is finally settled , the election will be in doubt , although it looks very much like "hoping against hope. " THE 49th Congress will stand 186 democrats and 139 republicans , a dem ocratic majority of 47 , instead of seven ty-five as at present. In the South , Hahn , of Louisiana , Smalls , of South Carolina , and three members in Ten nessee , two in Virginia and one each in Maryland and West Virginia are re publican. Morrison is re-elected ; so are Carlisle , Hewitt , Hiscock , Phelps , Belmont - mont , Randall , Curtin , Reagan , Spring er , andHolinan. Bee. THE sudden and unexpected outbreak of cholera in Paris will create some alarm. Coming just when the disease was supposed to be eradicated it will convince mauy that cholera can and probably will be transmitted great dis tances along the lines of travel and com merce , and make its appearance when least expected. The germ theory is strongly sustained by this incident , it being assumed that the germs were car ried to Paris. NEBRASKA is without question ad mirably adapted to the butter and cheese industry , and promises in a very few years to lead in the manufacture - , facture of those important staples. All of the creameries at present in operation in the state are turning out first grade butter , which is in good demand and commands the highest ruling prices. They all pay a good profit on the investment. " THE St. Louis Globe-Democrat asks , "What other people on .earth could pass through an experience of such intense anxiety and uncertainty as has prevailed in the United States for the last few days with such gen eral good humor and so much of rea sonable patience and self-control ? A similiar condition of things in al most any other nation of the world would inevitably have brought on public frenzy , riot and bloodshed. We are a rash and headstrong people in some respects , but when it is neces sary to be cool and considerate we are never found wanting. " THE excitemant over the reported capture of General Gordon and the sur render of Khartoum has subsided. Lat est advices from Lord "Woolseley , who is now on his way up the Nile with the relief expedition , represented Gordon as still holding out against the Mahdi's forces. Ample supplies and munitions of war have been forwarded to Dongola , General Woolseley's headquarters , for the Nile expedition and the relief of Gordon is now only a matter of time. Mr. Gladstone and his ministry have narrowly escaped parliamentary defeat by the contradiction of the reported dis aster to General Gordon. Much inter est is again felt in England in the fu ture Irish policy. The triumph of the Government in the matter of the Maam- trasna inquiry is like the blemish on the English victory at Bunker Hill. Anoth er such victory would be fatal. Although the vote in favor of Mr. Harrington's amendment was pitiful , the fact does not cell the whole story. Nearly a hun dred liberals who were in town refused the summons of the whip and declined to attend and vote -when Mr. Gladstone had finally decided to oppose the inquiry. This decision was reached by Mr. Glad stone only after repeated telegrams had ! > been sent to Lord Spencer , in Dublin , begging him to reconsider his threat to resign if the inquiry was granted. To all the inquiries-tile same dogged answer was returned by .Lord Spencer. The : speeches on the Government side were painfully weak- and perfunctory , and ? their few points were mercilessly riddled. IN the Nellie Quackenbush outrage case at Columbus'the grand jury found a true bill for manslaughter against Frank Smith and George Mathews. W. C. T. U. Evil is "wrought by lack of thought , As well ns lack of heart. Gospel Temperance meeting at Menard's Hall , next Sunday evening at 7 o'clock. CALLS TO DUTY. How much is there to win and do , How much to help and cheer ! The fields arc white , the laborers few ; Wilt thou sit plaining here ? A Red Sea may before thec flow , Egyptian hosts pursue : But He that bids theo onward go Will ope a pathway through. Henry Francis Lyto. DR. CHALMERS arraigned intemper ance in the following words : "Uefore God and man , before the church , the world , I impeach intemperance , I charge it with the murder of innumerable souls. I charge it as the cause of almost all the poverty , and almost all the crime , and almost all the ignorance , and al most all the irreligion that disgrace and afflict the land. I do , in my conscience , believe that these intoxicating stimu lants have sunk into perdition more men and women than found a grave in the deluge which swept over the highest hill-tops , engulfing the world , of which but eight were saved. As compared with other vices , it may be said of this , 'Saul hath slain his thousands , but this David his tens of thousands. ' ' " THEY have discovered a tree out in Nevada that is self-luminous at night. This is a wonderful vindication of the law of evolution. Out in Nevada trees arc scarce , and on dark nights their ser vices arc frequently needed by jurors who have just finished a case in Judge Lynch's court. The tree , appreciating the situation ; bent all its energies to the task of making itself visible in the darkness , which it has thus happily ac complished. This is a very remarkable thing , but by no means half so strange and apparently impossible as many oth er circumstances that have accompanied the evolution life in its journey upward from protoplasm. If you swallow the protoplasmic origin of life , you must take down the new luminous tree. Topics. A NATIONAL cattle-men's convention will begin at St. Louis on November 17 at which representatives of this impor tant interest will be present from all parts of the United States and from South America. The northwest , which is fast becoming the great cattle center of the United States and of the world , should , and undoubtedly will , be repre sented in force. This will be the first national convention ever held by cattle men and its session will be an import ant event. THE B. & M. railroad is reported to be making surveys for an extension of their connections to Wyoming and the Black Hills. The expectation is to jet ahead of-the Chicago & North western that is building the Sioux City & Pacific in the same direction. The surveying party started from Brush station on the line of the B. & M. in Colorado , and are now at work north of Cheyenne. Republican. IT is said , that , ultimately the B. & M. will make the Kansas City division of their line the main line and make Red Cloud the division with suitable headquarters. We hope it will not be long. The road is now figuring for a route to St. Louis. Red Cloud Chief. NOTICE.
