TIIERE seems to be an irrepressible
desire for revolution in the Spanish
blood. Just as we read that Spain is
lioney-combed with plots conies the in
telligence that a dozen or two of the
most prominent men of Mexico have
jeen arrested on charge of treason. It is
difficult to know just what constitutes
: reason in Mexico , but there is reason to
conclude that doing like pld Ben Butler ,
naming against both parties , would be
the most serious form of it. There
doesn't seem to be much of the real re
public about Mexico , and probably there
couldn't be.
FOURTEEN .million sheep have per *
shed in Australia during the present
season from drought. The shipments
of wool from that island continent will
> e almost nothingjii 18S5 , and the mar-
: et will greatly improve in consequence.
WASHINGTON LETTER.
"WashingtonD. C. , August 25 , ' 84.
Probably the most determined old
fraud that has afilioted the country in
the present generation is Brewster ,
the legal nonentity of the present
gruesome administration. It was
Brewster who told the other fellows
to stand back and watch him while he
landed every one of the Star Route
thieves in the penitentiary. It was
Brewster who never landed one of
them in the penitentiary , but made of
himself a laughing-stock for the whole
country in general and the legal pro
fession in particular. ' It was Brew
ster who then employed Bradley to
prosecute the civil cases against the
Star Routers , and who with infinite
bluster and bragadocio declared that
they should be drained to the last dollar
lar of their stolen fortunes. It is now
Brewster who quarrels with Bradley
forcing the latter to retire from the
cases , and it is Brewster who now
threatens to lift himself by the boot
straps and inject Brewster bodily into
the civil cases for all he is worth.
And who does'nt know what will be
the'outcome ? After Brewster has
expended § 100,000 of the people's
money to get a verdict for the Gov
ernment , he will open hfe eyes to dis
cover that the other fellows have had
his jurors and his witnesses and the
whole court machinery from the start.
All in all , Brewster is a fresh old par
ty. Speaking of Brewster , I am re
minded to say that Brewster's arrival
at Long Branch the other day was
the only genuine sensation socie
ty there has experienced this season.
The old fellow hauled up before the
hotel door with his coach and herald
thereon his coat-of-
emblazonry , gilt - -
arms protruding from the door like
the cat's heads from the Roman char
iots of a thousand years ago. Two
trunks and thirty valises , two footmen
and five liveried servants , comprised
the retinue of the lordly barrister ,
and this is a Government of the plain
democracy , and this one of its Cab-
inent ministers !
When a politician resorts to the
courts to obtain redress for libellous
attacks upon his character , he gener
ally comes out with a good deal less
of that commodity than he had when
he went in. Mr. Blaine shows an
undue sensitiveness for a politician in
claiming § 50,000 as a panacea for his
wounded character. Of course libels
even of a political character are not
to be excused or defended when they
involve injury and perhaps lasting
disgrace upon the reputations of the
innocent members of a family , and in
all such attacks the intention is the
gist of the offense. Nobody suppos
es that the editor of the Indianapolis
Sentinel intended to defame the char
acter cf Mrs. Blaine or her children
in the reflections made upon Mr.
Elaine's early remissness , and in so
far Mr. Blaine will hardly recover ;
damages enough to be equivalent to
the loss he will suffer by attempting
its reparation.
.If there is any one thing that can
scandalize Mr. Secretary Folger more t
than any other thing , it is to question t :
the abundance and infinitude of his
egotism. The great minister of finance
lets Wall street and its howling der
vishes go to the dogs , and keeps the
President and Cabinet in waiting

dows. The Secretary is running to
photographs fearfully and has been
taken in every conceivable position
except that of standing on his head ,
an acrobatic feat that Gov. Cleveland

no blushing maiden preparing herself
for the ball room deals so elaborately
in settling upon an esthetic smirk or

A CANADIAN has invented a new way
of fishing. Instead of taking a net and
fishing he has a flock of thirty geese. To
the legs of these fowls he lias a line and
baited hooks attached. The flock are
driven into the water and are followed
by the man's two sons , who drive them
up stream , thus making them troll. As
soon as a goose gets a bite it becomes
frightened and , with a great flopping of
wings and squawking , flics to the shore ,
where the fish is taken from the hook.
SINCE Hanlan has been defeated
by Beach it is generally considered by
the profession that he was an overra
ted sculler. This is the right thing
to say of a man when after a long
line of victories , he goes under. We
have no doubt but when Goliah tum
bled to David's little sling racket
there were thousands of Hebrews who
remarked that they always knew he

THE Massachusetts bureau of labor
las compiled a report of wages paid for
ionimon and skilled labor in that state
ind compared them with the present
atcs for the same classes of labor in Eng-
audj and find that the advantage to the
Massachusetts laborer is seventy-seven I
er cent. This showing indicates that as
lompared with the price of labor on the
ontiuent of Europe , Massachusetts

rages paid their brethren in France ,
Jermany , Italy , and Belgium. General
Butler will take notice and govern him-
