Chase National Bank , New * York. 1 ' W. F. WALLACE , Cashier. THE wife of Robert .T. Burdetto , who discovered in the Ifawkeye hum orist his latent talents , and although herself a hopeless invalid , persisted in the development of his genius , died this week. The loss will be irrepar able to the afllicted husband. TJIK state board of equalixutiou has" raised the assessment of the B. & M. line two thousand dollars a mile. The TJ. P. assessment is not raised so much. The returns to the auditor's office show the business of the B. & M. largely in excess of that of the U. P. IT took a Massachusetts jury only ten minutes to convict a "Worcester quack of manslaughter , he having bandaged a woman in kerosene , thus causing her death in a very short time. If all the quacks had their just des erts , the penitentiaries in this country would have to be largely increased in size and number to accommodate them. humorist of the Norwalk ( Cin cinnati ) Hour , who caused a run on the Norwalk savings bank by a face tious reference to the failure of a sand bank , now declares his intention to indemnify the depositors of the sav ings bank resulting from the panic created by his joke. This offer , com ing from a newspaper man , may be : onsidered another joke. THOSE who were so hasty to con demn Grant & Ward for their pecu liar business methods , can now pour out their denunciations upon the offi cials of the Penn bank at Pittsburgh , who , with a capital of only $200,000 to work on , managed to steal more than § 2,000,000. The only thing found in the bank of any value was thfc safe ; and that was too heavy to be carried olF. THE sworn statement by himself that he had hired Miss Hill as his mistress for five hundred dollars per month , puts Mr. Sharon without the pale of decent society , makes of him a social out-law and lecherous social leper of the worst kind. There has been nothing so shameless and shame ful in the history of criminal proced ure as this trial has developed. 'Its showing up of criminal lewdness by one of our millionaires is indeed shocking and should open the eyes of all respectable people everywhere. Gazette-Journal. SAMUEL J. TILDEX , who has one foot in the grave , ought to make the same arrangement with his family physician that William King , a rich old London merchant , made with his physician. He willed § 1,000 to his physician , with the proviso that the sum should be doubled every year that the testator should be kept alive. The second year the sum became 82,000 , the third year , 84,000 ; the fourth , 88,000 ; the fifth , 816,000 ; the sixth , 832,000 ; the seventh , 864,000 ; the eighth , 8128,000 ; the ninth,8256- 000 ; the tenth , 8312,000. Upon the death of Mr. King a few weeks ago , the physician was paid 8750,000 , be tween ten and eleven years having * - i O passed since the agreement. APJIOPOS of the crusade begun against piano playing in Berlin , the New York Times says : "The average German young lady practices four hours , every day , and many German younf men imitate her miserable ex ample. Police statistics show that the number of pianos in Berlin aver ages two and an eighth for every house. Thus on every block of a Berlin street there are from 200 to 740 pianos , according to the charac ter of the street and the financial cir cumstances of the residents. In a block where there are , say 400 pianos , each of which is in operation four hours a day , it is evident that there cannot be a moment between dawn ind midnight when some one is not practicing scales and exercises , or , ivorsc still , playing Wagner's music. " i I CITI IN THE FAR WEST And Offer Rare Chances . FOR THE ARTISAN , TRADESMAN ADD SPECULATOR , THE TOWN OF MeSOOK In Red Willow Comity , Nebraska , lias been surveyed , and lots in tlie market , for just one year and lias now a population of 1000 people. Tliis point lias been designated by tlie C. , B. & Q. as the DIVISION STATION between tlie MISSOURI RIVER & DENVER , where the principal shops , a 15 stall round house and other R. R. facilities have been located on the Denver Line. A complete system of water works costing $25,000 is just being completed giving all the facilities for comfort posessed of old cities. Lots will range in price from $150 to § 500 for business lots , and $50 to $200 for residence lots. The history of points like McCook show an increase of more than three hundred per cent , in from one to five years , and this town promises to be an exceptional chance for invest ments.
