C. Burton of Orleans , to the National Convention to be held in Chicago , June 3rd. "WE are pleased to sec Bro. Watkins of the Blue Hill Times brighten up and have some style about him. The Times now presents quite a neat news paper-like appearance. WHISKY , wool and oil is the curious mixture that has upset the Democratic party in Ohio. The Iroquois club ought to have sampled the new beverage and explained wherein they found it un wholesome , but it doubtless forgot it. IT is noted that judges in Cincinnati now make some effort to earn their sal aries. They used to dwadle over a case for several weeks , while the lawyers frittered away time and the clients ! grew poor. Now they get through a case in two or three days. As a result the courts present a scene of unusual activity. The riot was not without its effect on some persons , evidently. COLORADO , in order to check the rush of her miners to Coaur d'Alene , in Ida ho , sprung a boom of her own in the shape of a great gold discovery in a gulch , which had been abandoned for eightpen years. It was claimed that the ore was as rich throughout as the assays indicate , $8,000 to $15,000 could be produced per day by every man employed. It was expected that this would hold the miners in Colorado , but unfortunately it now turns out that the story is a fiction , and consequently the boom has fallen by the wayside. 3SOM Iowa and Pennsylvania , from Ohio and Minnesota and Kansas , from all the states that can and will give a majority for the Republican nominee , whoever he may be , the tidings are "all forBlaine. " Talk about sentiment ! It's a regular epidemic. Omaha Republican The only trouble THE TRIBUNE sees in Jeems' political horizon is that the Tlumed Knight may cateh an epidemic himself similar to the one that laid him low in the last National Convention. His friends seem to be too fresh to be curbed , and run out of ammunition be fore the battle waxes warm. THE. year of 1883 was an unparallel ed one in the history of the world. Observe a few figures : The number of deaths resulting from calamities all over the globe was 149,050. The mur der record" in the United States and Canada , a long and ghastly catalogue of bloody deeds , adds 2,248. The number of suicides in this country and Canada was 1,502. In the United States alone 7,196 deaths were the result of casual ties. The number of executions was 159 , and 186'were assisted up the golden den stairs by Judge Lynch , in the U. S. and British Domains. The fire fiend claimed $85,700,000 as his own during that year of horrors. HOT SPRINGS , ARK. , appears to have a two-fold mission , the first being , to use a scriptural phrase , the healing of the nations , while the second appears to be about an equal mixture of legal and illegal deviltry. If Blackstone him self arose from the dead and attempted to settle the question of land titles in that distracted'Tillage , he would gladly again retire to the seclusion of the grave after a preliminary hearing of the points involved. As matters now stand , there are two claimants for al most every available foot of earth in that narrow canyon , while the general government looms up in the rear as the probable rightful owner of the whole ' tract. The Supreme Court of the Uni ted States seems as badly mixed up on this subject as anyone else , and has within the last ten days practically re versed its decision of four years since , and left th'e purchasers and improvers of property under the congressional commission , all at sea as to their right and title to what they have paid for. As for the illegal deviltry , the record , of crime , particularly that of murder , is the most shocking for the past twelve months of any in. history. Altogether it needs some powerful sanitary reason , to induce any outsider cognizant of the situation to. visit. Hot Springs , and it is perhaps the-strongest testimony to the marvelous efficacy of its waters.thal the- influx of visitors is Unceasing , ' / ' I Commissioners Proceedings.
