J. B. MCDOWELL , FAIHUCUV , March 15,1881. Chairman. OUR CORRESPONDENCE. - HAIGLER. Cattle arc very poor in tins vicinity. Loss is quite heavy. C. D. 31oore is building a sod house on his homestead 6 miles from Uaigler. Mr. I. Porter went to Denver , Mon day , to visit his little daughter Maud , who is attending school there. Tom Hill was seen flying westward. We think that it will take a whole regi ment of U. S. Marshals to capture him. The weather has been somewhat fctormy within the past two weeks , but it helps the "grass along ; it is looking fine. . T. Mooie has just purchased two car loads of cattle at Burlington , Iowa , and intends shipping to'his ranch on Buffalo creek as soon as grass will permit. Mr. Carrington , from Culbertson , was in this vicinity Saturday , getting the landholders to sign a petition to have the landresurveyed by government survey. We think it a good idea. GC. . Workman and F. B. Moore have just put in 5,000 brook trout on F. B.'s homestead , aud intend pntting in carp soon. They will be ready for market in about two years , if they do as expected. April Sth. - CAD. OUR Senators and Bepresenatives have our thanks for public documents received. NEBRASKA , in its" next Legislature , it is said by a Nebraska poet , ought to provide for the indictment and punish ment of the compositor who "kills" so many poems. THE educational bill which passed the Senate , Monday , appropriated $77- 000,000 , to be distributed among the states in proportion to illiteracy , on the basis of the census of 1880 , the pay ment of the money to extend over a 'ser ies of eight years : 1st year , $7,000- 000 ; 2d year , $10,000,000 ; 3d year. $13,000,000 ; and-then diminish at the rate of $2,000,000 per year until the expiration of the Sth year , when the appropriation ceases. We know of no more befitting way of disposing of Un cle Sam's surplus gold than in the edu cation of his illiterate children. Neb raska's percentage will be the smallest of any state in the Union having less illiteracy than any other state. The southern states will receive the great bulk of the appropriation. GEN. GORDON is in the worst posi tion he has ever been in during his most eventful life. Each day makes it more and more precarious. He is shut up in Khartoum. No aid can reach him fro'in any source , it seems , allthough he is expecting some Indian troops to reach him by way of Suakim and Berber , but they fail to come to his rescue. The reports from Berber are that that the partisans of the Mahdi hold the entire a command of the Nile between Khar toum and Shendy. The governor of Sennar has sent to Gen. Gordon asking for help. The Sennar garrison , he Yill not bo able to hold out for ci says > cid another month , Gen Gordon advises d him to try and arrange a capitulation , w as help from Khartoum is impossible. hi letter Gen.
