William Linen took charge of the Hamilton House , this morning. Mr. John "W. TVelborri , our efftcient Sheriff , moves on the Hunterfarm. A gentleman from Fillmore county , Neb. , has rented the Sheriff's , house. Hon. J. "W. Dolan has added a few more quarter sections to his landed estate. . There was a car load of cattle unload ed here a few days ago , shipped from Iowa. Ten head of them had died on the car. A German family moved into our town , last week , "with two children very low w'ith diphtheria. One of them died Monday and the .other is not expected to live. We have to-day lost one of our best families. Last week , Mr. Gr. A. Hunter sold his farm , and on Monday he sold his household' goods at public sale , and his cattle at private sale to T. B. Babcock - cock of McCook. 'Mr. Hunter and family left on the east-bound "cannon ball" this afternoon. There was a large crowd gathered at the depot , with the Indianola' Cornet Band , to see them off. We regret to loose so good -a family from our town. As announced , last Saturday was the day for the Gr. A. B . Dinner , which was a grand success. About 500 persons ate dinner in the hall , and after dinner our post commander announced that we would have a speech from our fellow- townsman Major Criswell , but the Ma jor failed to respond. The commander next called upon Col. B. M. Snavely who responded with one of his stirring , patriotic speeches. H. M. Ashmore -.made a short speech on the remembrance of the commencement of the war and in memory of the dead soldiers. Dr. Shaw .made a good speech , after which Pap Kilgore was court-martialed for stealing hard tack , and was drumed .out of the % hall. We had splendid music by Col- vins' Glee Club and our Brass Band did well. March 18th. , A CITIZEN. SOUTH SIDE. John. Stone has sold his homestead forl',000. - I. J. Birdsall is home again. A number of friends were invit ed ; among whom were Bev. Dungan - and family of McCook and Mr. Long- neckef and family of Bed Willow. The dance a't Capt. Holmes' house , Friday night , under the management of 3Ir. Webb , passed off pleasantly , except that some young "brilliant , " who is pre paring himself for a.course at Lincoln , saw fit to mutilate a new saddle belong ing to Billie Pryor. A few weeks ago while attending a prayer meeting at Squire Williams , Charlie Newman had the sinch straps cut from his saddle. The boys are just ly indignant and if they succeed in "lo cating" the guilty party he may find some other climate more conducive to general health and physical beauty than this. JOSIE. It is reported that the disease has made its appearance in Louisa coun ty , Iowa , and we should not be surpris ed to learn of its breaking out among Nebraska cattle almost any day. We urge our farmers and stock-raisers to keep a close watch on their cattle , and when they discover any cattle with the disease to kill them at once and destroy , the carcasses by fire. This is the best way to check the spread of the disease. Bee. A DESCENDANT of Mohammed is publishing a "paper in Paris in the in terest of El Mahdi , and against the En glish. AUSTRIA is a very comfortable coun try for publishers of political newspapers papers/ Every newspaper appearing more than twice a month has to deposit caution-money if politics are treated or mentioned. For Vienna and surround ings this deposit is fixed at $9.000 } for towns of GO,000 inhabitants , at $8,000 ; for towns of 30,000 inhabitants , at $2,000 , and for all other places at $1- 000 ; but papers only appearing three times a week need only pay half the amount. GOVERNOR IRWIN , of Idaho , con tinues the eccentricity of returning his salary to the.treasury department. He has just returned $650 , being the amount of his salary for the quarter ending De cember 31. This makes the third quar ter's salary that he has sent back to the treasury department. The only expla nation of his conduct is that being un able to attend to his duties he cannot conscientiously accept the salary. A NEGRO said to be 121 years old has iust died in Canada. He threw great , doubt over his genuineness by claiming' a. personal acquaintance with George Washington. In this connection it-mus be said'to the credit of a Mexican wo man , who died in California last year a the alleged age of 132 , that she had never heard of the Father of his Coun try Topics. SOME men become famous by "happy hits. " Congressman florr became fa mous by asserting in one of his speeches that "the south had better raise more hogs and less hell. " He is now regard ed as one of the wittiest speakers in Congress. Congressman Hatch , the oth er day , made a somewhat similar hit when he said that what the Democratic party wanted was a few funerals. THE Lincoln Journal is a little pre vious when it states : The Catholic church at Indianola has been dedicated with the usual cere monies , a large attendance and much interest. * Owing to the inability of Bishop Con nor to be present , the dedicatory service has been indefinitely postponed.
