WEEKLY TRIBUNE , F..M. &E. M. KIMMELL , Editors and Publishers. * TV ' ' CONGRESS has voted $300,000 to the sufferers by the Ohio floods. THE Senate /Committee on Agricul ture have unanimously ordered a favor- ble report on the bill to prevent the spread of pleuro-pneumonia prepared by representatives of the cattle interest , and introduced by Senator Miller. THE Republican State Central Com mittee will meet at the Millard hotel , I Omaha , February 27th , at 7 P. M. , for the purpose of calling a State Conven tion to choose delegates to the National Convention. THE Democrats in this district are endorsing Hon. James Laitd's action in voting for the restoration of Fitz-John Porter. What effect this will have oh Mr. Laird's future political career is doubtful. Gazette-Journal. THE Texas Legislature has appropri ated $50,000 for the detection.of fence- cutters. It has also enacted a law re- squiring the owners of fenced ranges to have gates at intervals of three miles , and thus enable an approach to be made to water. . " THE column cf "Topics of the Times" we missed a f evr daya ago in the Lincoln Journal , and divined that something unusual aiaat have tyccerred to Mr. Calhoun - houn , . its genial .ind" sble writer. The sympathy of the press of Nebraska will be evoked by the announcement that the cause of the editor's absence was the death of a beloved child. Republican. "CHINESE" GORDON , concerning whose safety there was so much fear , has reached Berber , in the Soudan. So far he has maintained his reputation for reckless bravery and has met with his usual good fortune. General Gordon passed through the desert accompanied only by his se6retary , Col. Stewart , and the son of the Governor of Berber. Prev ious to starting on his journey General Gordon sent a message to the troublesome - some Sheikhs , saying : "Meet me at Khartoum. If you want peace , I am for peace. If you want war , I am ready. " STANDARD time is fixed by adopting the local time of four Meridians which traverse the United States fifteen de grees a'part , hence there is a difference of one hour's time between each Merid ian used. The first passes near Phila delphia and gives us eastern time. The second passes near St. Louis and gives us central time. The third passes near Denver and gives us mountain time , and the fourth "is near Virginia City , and e called Pacific time. Each time is one of hour slower than that of the Meridian dc dcm east of it. Each locality will use the m time of the Meridian th to which it is near est. Thus all of Nebraska as far as 18Pi McCook , uses the central time , and west 3" of that point , uses mountain time. ot at te THE Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette an .speaks strong words in behalf of Gen. anm Porter : "Pope and Porter-were both w educated soldiers and good fightingmen. th Both are Hien of a distinguished order th Us of ability. The of extravagancies pub gal lic opinion holding one to be a fool and ca vii the other a traitor are monstrously un an just. There is no inconsistency in being CO friendly with both. The man who fought clt the battle of Games' Mills and Malvern to Hill should be ca judged with great consideration on sideration , and on the 30th day of Au gust Porter's little corps , rested , reso Sa lute , well-handled , could not save the day , but prevented the disaster from being beyond rcmedyl Politicians spout srn about Fitz John Porter as if he never m fought a battle , when he was the right th hand of the government in Pennsylva e nia in the critical days at the beginning UK of the war ; when he won the battle of Hanover Court-house when he ; fought Ti a wonderful battle at Gaiues' Mills ; ing when he saved the army at Malvern thi Hill ; when he was the wall of fire stand me ing against-the confederate hosts on the day after his alleged misconduct , which jek was foreseen by a staff officer with the ind mystic gift of clairvoyance. civ ; Commissioners Proceeding ! . .
