    WEEKLY TRIBUNE ,
F. M. & E. M. KIMMELL ,
Editors and Publishers.
OF five thousand bills introduced it
the House , this session , fourteen bun
< lred are for pensions. *
A BILL has been introduced in the
Wyoming Legislature to tax bachelors ,
lawyers and "other animals , "
A BILL has been introduced in the
Maryland legislature to opportion the
' atate school tax so that colored and
white schools may be equalized.
THE death rate among Congressmen
has been such , the present session , as to
attract very gcueral attention. The de
cease of Mr. Mackey , of South Carolina ,
whose funeral was held yesterday in the
House of Representatives , was the sixth
that has thus far taken place among
our legislators.
THE bill for the relief of Fite-Jolm
Porter , which has been occupying the
attention of Congress more or less for
several years , has at last passed the
House , and it will very likely pass the
Senate. When this subject is disposed
of it will be a relief not only to Fitz-Jbhn
Porter , but to the whole country.
DAKOTA is almost ready for admis
sion into the Union. Her politicians
are calling each other liars , the Gover
nor has been charged with bribery , two
Episcopal dioceses have been created ,
Henry Villard has smashed ail-to pieces ,
and the snow is seven feet on a dead
level. All that is needed now to qualify
Dakota for an equal rank with the bor
der states is an embroidered night shirt
and a bonanza vulgarian to fill it Bee.
Br the House land-grant forfeiture
bill that passed the House , if concurred
in 'by the Senate , which now seems
probable , 20,000,000 will be thrown
open to settlement that would have be
longed to the railroad companies had
they lived up to their contracts with
the government. This is as it shonld
be. It is nothing more than right that
those who fail to come up to their con
tracts in such matters should pay the
penalty of their dereliction.
THE "fence" "free "
or grass" ques
tion in Texas has created a great excite
ment in that state. The owners of large
herds of cattle and the land owners
have been at war for some time and the
Legislature fails to afford relief. To
show the extent of feeling upon the
subject , State Senator Jewell received
an anonymous letter .threatening that if
free grass was interfered with by the
Legislature , all the waters in the state
of Texas enclosed in pastures would be
poisoned. The mysterious sweeping off
of cattle in some sections giv"es founda
tion for serious apprehensions.
THE telegraph columns of the Jour
nal have lately contained two awful
temperance lecturers. A few days ago
a man named Anderson was burned to
death in his store at Sacramento , this
state. Yesterday morning a special dis
patch contained the intelligence that
Henry B. Holmes , of Bloomington , had
met a like fate in his barn. We knew
Holmes well. He was not a drunkard.
He was a moderate drinker who "knew
when he had enough. " But at last he
drank too much. Not so much but that
he could reach home in safety and go
to his barn and se about his stock.
He had drank enough to dull his intel
lect and make him careless. He proba
bly struck a match , lighted his lantern ,
and dropped the blazing lucifer unno
ticed upon the hay. The blaze sprang
tip , and when he , turning from the rear
of the burning building , would go out ,
he found himself confronted with a wall
*
of fire. His sensations during the few
awful seconds left to him cannot be con
templated without a shudder. A genial
and popular man , a good citizen , he is
cut off by the demon of alcohol in a
moment , leaving a widow and children
to battle with the world alone , the same
s
"fell fiend that deprived them of husband
and father sweeping away much of their
means of subsistence. Young man , the
only safety is in abstinence. Topics.
CARRICO COOINGS.
THE TRIBUNE is meeting the ideas
of this people.
Measles will soon be a thing of the
past. Only one case on the docket.
Stockmen on this portion of the Wil
low say they find it to their interest to
trade : vt McCook.
Mr. Troth besides buying L. K. Sit-
lcr' interest on this creek , has pur
chased the stock belonging to Dean
Wilber. Mr. Troth likes the creek and
has come to stay. His family will be
here in March.
Miss Braugh has returned from North
Platte whither she accompanied her
brother , lleport says Mr. Braugh will
choose a wife from among the North
Platte belles and travel 'through the
Southern States for a few weeks.

Fine grazing for cattle. Snow almost
all gone.
A. Camp has about 800 head of sheep
on his ranch at the head of the Willow.
Schuyler Braugh recently made final
proof of his claim on the Willow. He
has fine hay land.
E. N. Keeler , who has a good hay
land claim at the head of Living Water ,
is building a turf house on the same.
Geo. Gowring , E. Wheaton and fath

TERRIBLE STATE OP THINGS among
the manufacturers of cheap and adul
terated Baking Powder , at the capture
of their trade by DeLand & Co. , with
their Chemical Baking Powder , where-
over the two have come together. The
American people are able and willing
to pay for a first-class article when it is
offered to them. Sold by Hayden & Co ,
EXPRESS AGENT DYER , at Red Cloud ,
was held up by masked road agents near
town , one evening last week. The haul
was not worth the trouble--$2.75. Mr ;
Dyer says he "gazed complacently down1
the barrels of three cocked ' revolvers
from the wrong end , " which alone was
worth the price of admission.
THIS time Baker Pasha receives the
compliments of the False Prophet in
Soudan. El Mahdi relieves him of
about three-forths of his heterogenous
command in the same old paralyzing
manner.
M. N. PARMALEE , ex-B. & M. agent
at Juniata , is said to have gobbled about
$200 from the express packages of the
company. The tiger and toddy led to it.
