I. , was elected temporary chairman of the republican ' state convention by a vote of 5G8 to 443 , defeating by a majority of 125 Vice-president James S. Twice the state committee , under old guard dominance , had se lected Mr. Sherman for the position , only to bo overridden on the conven tion floor Tuesday. Abraham Grubnor , a New York lawyer , made a particularly bitter at tack. Colonel Roosevelt , in his speech , spoke against political and business corruption in characteristic vein and praised the administration of Presi dent Taft and Governor Hughes. William Barnes , jr. , of Albany , lead er of the old guard , issued a statement denouncing Colonel Roosevelt as he has done heretofore and praising those of the old guard who stood firm. Interest in the Roosevelt-Sherman struggle occupied so much of the stage center that discussion of candi dates was overshadowed. But promi nent among the possible gubernatorial nominees are Representative William S. Bennett , Henry L. Stlmson , State Senator Harvey D. Hlnnman and Wil liam A. Pendergast of New York. Colonel Roosevelt spoke feelingly of what President Taft had accomplished In his administration in his speech as temporary chairman , saying that the laws passed reflect high credit upon all who succeeded in putting them in their present shape upon the statute book they "represent an earnest out look of the achievement which Is yet to como and the beneficence and far- reaching importance of this work done for the whole people measure the credit which is rightly duo to the congress and to our able , upright and distinguished president , William How ard Taft. " Colonel Roosevelt bitterly assailed the bosses , declaring that the differ ence between a boss and a leader Is that the leader loads and the boss drives. The nom ination of Mr. Stlmson was one mpro victory for Colonel Roosevelt , who personally led the fight for the nomi nation of his candidate , completing the unbroken series of triumphs from the moment the convention was called to order until its final adjournment. United States Senator Root was named as chairman of the convention > by the committee on permanent or ganization. The roifort was adopted and Colonel Roosevelt appointed Charles Francis of Troy and Speaker Wadsworth of Troy to escort Mr. Root to the chair. There was a loud laugh when Col onel Roosevelt ntarled to leave the platform without Introducing Senator Root. Secretary Oleason hustled after the colonel to correct the break. "I understand you may not identify the chairman I am about to introduce. I am culled back to present the per manent chairman of the convention the lion. 121ihu Root , " said Colonel Roosevelt. Chairman Root thanked the conven tion for the honor they had con ferred on him. "When Nassau county was reached Colonel Roosevelt took the platform to nominate Henry L. Stimson of New- York. United States District Attorney John Lord O'Brinn of Buffalo second ed the nomination of Mr. Stlmson. There were no further speeches and the roll was called by assembly dis tricts. William Barnes , Jr. , cast twen ty-eight votes for Mayor James B. McEwan of Albany , one delegate not voting. Stimson was nominated on the first ballot , receiving G48 of the 1,015 votes. Clarence Bradley , 20 years old , a son of Dr. C. A. Bradley of Beatrice , was shot and killed in the barn at his home , supposedly by the accidental discharge of a 22-caliber rifle with which he was shooting rats. The ball entered the right temple , causing Instant death. The body was found by his father , who went to the barn to call him for supper.
