The victory Col. Roosevelt won In
the republican state convention In
Now York Tuesday would Indicate
that a prophet Is not nlwnys wlth-
out honor In his own country.
The voters of Custer county who
do not want Dahlmanlsm to control
the Btato of Nebraska will look well
to the protection of their own Inter
ests by fighting shy of" candidates
for office that ftro publicly support
ing Dahlman.
Among the , few Demo-Pop papers
that hnvo not yet declared for Aid-
rich for governor In proferanco to
Dahlmnn is the official paper of
Custor County. Got In the band
wagon Mro. Deal whllo there Is room
and for once experience the feeling
of being In good company.
The United States Sonatorshlp In
Nebraska resolves Itself Into a cholc
between Burkott and Hitchcock. If
Burkett receives all of the republi
can votes of the state and there
" \ should bo a republican legislature
ho would bo re-elected. Vice versa
It would bo Hitchcock. . Durkott Is a
supporter of Taft and Roosevelt.
Hitchcock is neither. Bo careful of
your ballot. Kearney Hub.
The democrat candidates for of
fice find themselves In rather an em-
harassing position politically. They
are politically under obligations to
support the party nominees from
the leant to the greatest. But there
Is the rub. They are afraid to declare -
clare themselves for Dahlman , their
candidate for governor for fear of
losing votes among the antl-Dahlmar
crowd. Upon the other hand should
they declare themselves against
Dahlman they fear that his support-
em will not support them. In fact
there docs not seem to bo any ex
cuse for a democrat candidate In
this campaign.
/ Mussing The Jtccord.
The campaign of deception which
lias always been a characteristic
part of the record of the Omaha
\Vorld-IIerald is being carried out
in this campaign , notwithstanding
that all previous attempts to deceive
the voter in former years have not
panned out successfully.
Its last attempt in the deception
line is an adroitly worded editorial
in its issu6 of the 21st , In which it
quotes fron statements made jjy an
opponent of Senator Burkott before
the primary stating that the sena
tor had voted against free lumber.
This assertion made against the Sen
ator's record was mot and proven to
ho fnho during the primary cam-
palcn and the World-Herald knows
; t. It therefore quotes from Unit
statement in an endeavor to imwn
up the records in such a way that
the reader of the paper will be de
ceived.
In order that the voter may know
the facts In the caHo we have exam
ined the Congressional Record and
present the following facts taken
from that document , which as all
know Is n correct redord of the pro
ceedings of the United States Senate
and the vote of its members upon
every question which comes up.
At several different times Senator
Hurkett addressed the senate in be
half of a reduction in the lumber
schedule and his votes at different
times thereon are herewith shown :
On Page 3071 of the Congression
al Record is found an amendment of
fered for a reduction of the tariff
upon certain kinds of lumber. That
amendment was defeated , but Sen
ator Uurkett , with Senator Brown ,
Senator Cummlngs , Senator Dolllvor
and Senator LaFolletto voted for Its
passage.
On page 3080 another amendment
was Introduced having for its object
the reduction of the tariff on certain
kinds of lumber' and the record
chows that Senator Burkott , with
Senators Brown , Cummins , Dollivor
and LaFollette voted for It. That
amendment was also defeated.
On page 38G1 the Congressional
Record discloses the fact that still
another attempt was made to lower
the tariff on certain kinds of lumbei
this attempt also meeting with de
feat , but Senators Burkott , Brown ,
Cummins , Dolllver and Lafollotto
voted for the reduction.
On page 38G9 of the Congresslona
Record It Is shown that an amend
ment was offered PUTTING LUM
BER ON THE FR1313 LIST. The
record shows that SENATOR BUR-
KETT VO13D FOR THAT AMEND
MENT. The record also shows that
Senators Brown , CummlnH and La-
Follotte with other progressives voted -
od with Senator Hurkett for this a-
mcndment to place lumber on the
free list.
The a hove Is the record. The
record is the best evidence. W1V
the World-Herald give the same prominence
minonco to a correction of its form
er statement'that it did to the ar-
tlclo of the 21st inst ? Will it show
the facts In the case or continue to
deceive it's readers in its efforts to
elect its editor to the United States
Senate.
An Open Letter.
Last week wo published an opei
letter from Richard L. Metcalfo , the
managing editor of Bryan's Commoi
er , wherein he gives his support to
Chester II. Aldrlch , the ropublicai
candidate for governor against .1. C.
Dahlman , the candidate for governor
on the democrat ticket. The follow
Ing letter Is the answer from Chcsto
II. Aldrlch.

terror that ever threatened any homo

beun cngLd as best could be , the
people of the Btato , by their reprc-
senta n es , have enacted laws for
sole i urposo ot controlling the liqu
or In-flic within the state. The Slo-
comh law wns a good law as far as
it we-it ; the nnti- treat law is : i good
1-iw , 'Tovit'ed it would be enforced ;
the eight o'clock closing law is a
good law , all tl ese laws have been
enact-d and havj been of much ben
efit , and to a limited degree , amount
to a soit pf , safe guard to the homo

have heretofore received the opposi

Now wo have county option which
bus proven a success in sixteen
states ; tills is a stop towards a more

proposed law is not prohibition by

of th > control , right to the homo ;
and 1 y the homes of the various
counties is determined the question
whotl or the county will have "boozo

and complete protection to the homo
against its worst and deadliest foe.
Wo have before us Mr. Dahlman
who declares ho will "veto a bill if

you are not a victim of appetite , if
you are not one having a homo that
has been devastated by the system ,

as the men now stand , , by their de
clared words , there is no good reas

support in Custer county , nor In the
state of Nebraska. 1 have not dls-
ciibsed the financial matters connect

criminals , jails , , pool-houses , etc. ,
those tilings would require- too much
space. The one gem above all else
upon which the mind , soul , heart an
