The following government rule for measuring hay in a round stack may be of interest to our readers : "Divide the distance around the stack by four , to get one side of a square of equal size. Subtract one side of the square from the distance over and divide by two to get height. Then multiply the square of the base by the height to get the number of cubic feet in the stack and divide by 400. the number cubic feet ma ton. " Simplified Spelling. " DO YOU WANT A Farm Loan Without "Red Tape ? " MAKES THEM. Postal Savings Coming. Advices from Washington , which seem to emanate from authoritative sources , are to the effect that a law providing for the establishment of postal sav ing banks will be enacted by the present congress , and probably be among the first measured of the legislative program recom mended by President Taft to be put through. There is no question but that postal savings banks arc earnest ly demanded by the people , al though , of course , certain inter ests are- for one reason and an other opposed. The chief oppo sition seems to come from two sections , na.uiely , the national and state banks who look with disfavor upon savings banks in general , and some of the big savings banks who fear that postal savings accounts may re duce the volume of their deposits. Some other opposition is also en countered from those who object to any extension of government functions and regard the addi tion of the savings bank to the postofiice department as an un warranted interference of govern ment in private business. All the arguments have been thrashed out year after year , while public sentiment favoring the postal savings bank propo sition has steadily grown , until to meet it a promise of this legis lation was incorporated in the platforms oh which the presi dential candidates of both great political parties were nominated the last time. To be sure , the democratic platform suggests postal savings banks only as a last resort after depositfguaranty Bhall have failed , but with such a plank in their platform it will be awkwaru for the democrats to oppose a postal savings bank bill simply because it is part of the program of the republican ad ministration. During the cam paign and since his incumbency of the presidential office , Mr. Taft has openly and repeatedly endoised a postal savings bank project , and the bill , when finally formulated , is sure to have the powerful influence of adminis tration backinir which should insure its emergence from con gress in a satisfactory form. Bee. Comet A of 1910. The luminous body now visable to observers in various parts of the country is a new comet. It is known as "Comet A of 1910. " It closely resembles the great cnmet of 1882. The new celestial body was re ported by Dr. A. T. A. Innes , of the observatory at Johannesburg. South Africa , on Jan. 16. An analysis of photogaphic ob servations made here shows that the new body differs greatly from comets in general. The usual comet spectrum con sists of bright series of hydro carbon bands , but the comet now visable shows light hydro-carbon bands with a pair of intensely bright sodium lines. The strik ing orange color of the comet head , as observed in various parts of the country , is said to be due to incandescent sodium vapor. N. T.
