" Rohoboth Sunday Herald. VALUABLE TIMBER IN ALASKA. Traveler Tellt of Vast Forest Wealth In the Territory. "Although the hardwood men of the United States may have to witness with alarm the depreciation of the area of oak and walnut in the Appala chian ranges und the lower Mississippi .hero Is plenty of the other sort loft on : ho continent , " remarked E. II. Mor- tes of Spokane , Wash. "Tho world has no idea of the ro- gources from a tlmberumn's view * point of the great untouched Alaskan forests , " continued Mr. Mertos. "Up from Valdcz und stretching on ubovo the Tannna river the forest growth ot Alaska , mainly pine It is true , but the biggest , lluest pine in tie land Is prodigious. The interior of Alaska Is given over to much stunted growth , owing to the severe winters , but along the softer climated coast the forests arc simply Indescribable iu tholr un cut luxuriance. It will bo many years before the woodsman's ax is heard over the thousands ot square miles Included ' cluded in this domain. " The Woman and the Earrings. "Now look at that woman , " said a man in the car , who was evidently a woman hater , "wearing earrings in this day and generation. Actually piercing the flesh so us to further adorn herself , as though enough or naments could not bo hung or other wise attached to the person. I norar have been able to understand why they do not still wear rings In their noses and bells on their toes and put court plaster beauty spots on their faces , Just as they used to do , and a bit farther back put paint on. their faces Indian fashion , and a bit farther back still Indeed , one may go to the African gold coast to-day and llnd men as well as women cutting vertical slashes in their faces us murks ot beauty. However , mind you , I am not kicking. It is just encouraging to ob serve that so few womeu to-day wear earrings. " How to Help Our Friends. We often uttempt to regulate Uio lives of our friends through imposing our own wills upon them. This wo do under the impression that our con ception of truth is superior < to theirs , and that we sco more clearly than they do. This is really but n form of selfishness , and binds all who indulge In it , both the strong and the weak. Of course there is a point where a kind and friendly desire to help an other may bo productive of good. But when the desire to help another in volves the subjugation of his spirit and understanding , then that desire becomes a selfish one. For you can not force a knowledge of truth upon anyone. Only'love and patlehco and living the truth yourself can bring it to the consciousness of your friends. From the Nautilus. The Argument of Gold. A man who is furnished with argu mcnts from the mint will convince his antagonist much sooner than one who draws them from reason und philoso phy. Gold is a wonderful clearer ot the understanding ; it dissipates every doubt and scruple in an Instant ; ac commodates itself to the meanest ca pucltles ; silences the loud and clamor ous , und brings over the most ob- Btlnute and .inflexible. Philip ot Macedou was a man of most invincible reason this way. He refuted by it all the wisdom of Athens confounded their statesmen , struck theh orators dumb , and at lengtl argued thorn out of all their liberties , Joaeph Addlson. When the Face IB Beautiful. "No face is a failure , " says a writer , "which Is loved by even the meanest thing alive. You may bo lonely and desulato , but if your face is loved by your dog it is a magnificently tri umphant success. If your face Is loved by ono human being then Us success la moro dazzling than that of a hated emperor or a loveless millionaire. The shape of your face has absolutely nothing to do with the question In point You may bo worse than ugly that is to say , you may bo plain- but if your features are dear to ono jr two human beings , then your fea tures are In the blithest sense ot the word beautiful.
