"Walter Herrick is husking corn for M. D. Stone. Tom Rector of Ormsby spent Sunday with John Martin. Glen Richardson has finished husking corn for A. I. Routh. Nearly every one is ready for a corn shelter to put in an appear ance. J. T. Cole's and 13. B. Sands' will soon be through picking corn. Oscar Tappan and family were entertained at G. J. Martin's last Sunday. Chas. Koozcr has got home from Ormsby , where he has been husking corn. Supt. Pinckney visited the Tappan Valley school last Tues day afternoon. Mrs. G. C. Rector visited her mother , Mrs. A. I. Routh , a day or so last week. Roscoc Callen who has been in this vicinity the last few days liaa been on the sick list. M. D. Callen , wife and daugh ter Maud spent Sunday at Mr. Rector's near Ormsby. Oscar Tappan and Clarence Franklin have returned from their trip to Gandy. Have not yet learned the results of this Bunting expedition. D Seems queer without any parties or gatherings of any kind at this time of the season. Miss Helen Reneau of Broken Bow visited from Friday night until Sunday evening with Miss Madge Bishop. E. B. Barber was getting ready to move from Broken Bow back to the farm in this locality the first of the week. Misses Mabel Routh and Bertha Koozer visited in Broken Bow on last Wednesday with Mrs. F. K. Griffith. Are all the little children look ing for Santa Claus on Dec. 24 ? Write him a letter , at Broken Bow and make known your desires , and perhaps he'll be more liable to please you. Some of the young people oi Ormsby , were skating in Mr. Holcomb's pasture. The Tappan - pan Valleyites were also trying some of the nearby lagoona. The Extreme cold weather and light snow , ha ? kept the people closer home than usual. Prizes will be awarded for best loaf of bread and ability to score bread. Contest will be concluded by a lecture on bread making. CAU.AWAY SITTINGS. Lawyer J. B. Dunn made a trip to Oconto on legal business Tuesday morning of this week. Rev. J. W. Seabrooke was called home to University Place to preach the funeral sermon of a friend. Presiding Elder Matz , of the Evangelical Church , is assisting Rev. Netherly in the meeting ot of that church this week. Dr. Shumate , District Super intendent of the Kearney Dis trict ot the Methodist Church , preach Sunday niget in the M. Church. Mr. Geo. O. Benger went to Davis City Tuesday morning on business He will also visit Omaha before he returns and take in the Great Corn Expo sition there which opens Wednes day of thin week. Mr. Gred Payton and Miss Lillian Morgan were joined in wedlock at the home of the bride's parents , Mr and Mrs. N. M. Morgan , last Tuesday even ing , by Rev Nethe'rly. Mr. Austin Miller of Callaway , and Miss Eva Morgan of York served as best man and lady on the occasion. These two estimable people were born and raised here. They have the best wishes of all friends. Miss Minnie E. Oliphant , evan gelist , a'cousin of Mr. Roy Bar nard , has been visiting here the last week , and several nights ad- dreased the people at the evan gelical church , where a series ot meetings are now being held. Miss Oliphaut is on her wa ) from Callaway to her home place in the east where she has been engaged for evangelistic work. It is too bad she cannot remain longer here for Callaway needs just such workers as bad as any place. PLKASANT VIRW. John Lee and father have been husking corn for H. Wootcrs. Several from here attended the party at Chas Rudical's Thurs day night. Mrs. D. II. Itudical spent Fri- dny with her daughter Mrs. H. C. Wooters. Claris and Willis Selby visited the latter part of last week at Chas Fodge. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Selby , and daughter spent Tuesday in this neighborhood. ORTHI.I.O. J. R. Baker returned home from Lincoln Friday. Charley Waters of Mcrna was a caller in the valley Tuesday. Harry Ashbough was a caller at Mr. Hunt's Sunday evening. Mrs. Ingram visited relatives in Merna Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Allie Harrington is stay ing at Chas. Hostick's this week. Carrie Murry and Lee Lown visited Ida and Purly Ingram Sunday. Claud Willis was visiting the school a few days this week. Mr. Barnes' sister and friend of Litchileld started to college on Monday. The boys have changed the date of their social t > Friday evening the 18th. Miss Lottie Waterberry spent Saturday and Sunday with her parents at Berwyn. Prof. Cornett was building a hog pen Saturday. Guess he is joinginto the swine business. Mr. Klatt will favor the stu dents with a solo the night of their entertainment if his voice permits. The college and city teams played basket ball Friday even ing , the score being 3d to 18 in favor of the college. Miss Zoah Ward of Oconto has quit college and is teaching the McKiuley school. Her absence is missed by all the students , The Custer College first basket ball team had their pictures taken Tuesday. Mr. Taylor will be uaable to take any more pictures until he receives his new camera. The Third Market Day. The third market day sale con ducted by Auctioneers Tinder & O'Rorke drew a good crowd and a nice lot of stuff was sold for good prices. About twenty head of horses and a number of hogs and cows were sold at the sale , A few farm wagons and other machinery brought good prices. SOCIETY ITEMS | APTHRNOON PARTY. Mrs. John Squires and Mrs. Robertson entertained Wednes day , afternoon at the pleasant home of Mrs. Squires' . The in vitations announced "a shirt waist party" and were issued to eighty-five ladies , in and out of the city. After a pleasant hour a contest was announced and was followed by the distribution of sheets of paper on which was typewritten storietls called a "shire waist romance. " Here and there a word was omitted , and the guests were expected to be familiar enough with all the parts of \vaist , that has been in vogue , for these many years to supply the omission. The con test created much merriment but no one was able to supply all the words. Delicious refreshments were served. Mrs. Squires and Mrs. Robertson were assisted in serving by Mrs. Orr and Mrs. II. H. Squires. TWO KKNSINGTONS. Last Friday and Saturday after * noon Mrs. I. A. Coleman and Mrs. Fred Ream entertained some of their friends at two Ken singtons , at the home of Mrs. Coleman. Saturday afternoon was in honor of Mrs. Mathews of Callaway , who is the j guest of Mrs. George Mair. Late in the afternoon a stray morsal of gossip , a most unusual thing found its way among the guests namely that they were being entertained on millionairs row , and immediately , without question , the ladies residing on thai row became privileged characters. The house was- decorated with white chrysan themums , as were also the small tables at which the guesta were served a four course luncheon. Those present and invited were : Mesdames. Lotnax , Xanders , Brenizer , Bowcn , Baisch , Moly- neux , Morgan , W. Martin , Bug- land , Gutterson , Mair , J. Squires \ Mrs. Mathews of Lincoln and J Mrs. Helen Smith of Chicago.
