IIIIKTIH-N WOMliN SIGNIU ) SALOON I'liTI- TIONINOCONW. MOTHERS 01s 39 CHILDREN , Is it Womanly to Sign a Death Mill Peti tion ? Some Day Their Hearts Will Ache When a Son or a Daugli- ( cr Is Ruined. Tlie following- from tlie Ne braska Issue of July will be of interest to our readers : , and while one saloon in the county is a blot on Ouster's fair name , the day is coining when it will be banished. We are informed that if the mothers of thirty-nine children in the little city of Oconto had withheld their names from Dan iel iJnckley's petition Ouster county would not be alllicled with a saloon. We can find no excuse for a man st nin a saloon petition , and when it comes to women , especially mothers , signing one , we are at a loss for words to do the subject justice. W have seen mothers who wcte heartbroken because their sons were drunkards , others because their daughters were bound in marriage to men who thought more of the saloon than they did of their wives. These scenes were sorrowful and moved the strongest to tears. These mothers never sanctioned a salooii in their town , and if they had , their anguish would have been a thousand fold greater than it was. Let us hope that the mothers who signed Daniel Buckley's saloon petition may never be called upon to mourn the ruin of one of their children , for it is bad enough to be the cause of placing- temptation be fore , other mothers' boys and girls besides your own. ttead the following : "Ouster County , Nebraska , is 48x5-1 miles and has only one saloon. This saloon is located at Oconto , a small town in the south central part of the county. The saloon is run by Daniel Buckley. Ilis petition for a license was signed by the following ing- women towit : Mary Fox , mother of two chil dren. dren.Mary Brennan , mother of three children. Cora 15. lirown mother of two children. Ella Ivelloy , mother of six children. Marie K Tnndle , mother of one child. Mary McGuigan , mother of four children. Mrs. Frank Mayo , mother of six children. Kate Whealen , mother of two children. Mrs. Annie Jackson , mother of two children. Molly Moore , mother of four children. Minnie Robinettc , mother of five children. BhanchcVinkeltiun , mother ol two children. Lillian Brig-ham , no children. The signers of this saloon pe tition are the mothers of thirty- nine children. Saloons live on the ruin of boys and girls. How many boys and girls do these mothers wish to iurnish for the Oconto saloon ? Mothers , do you want your children to know that you signed Daniel Buckley's petition for a saloon at Oconto ? Do you con sider it an honorable womanly act to thus commit yourself to the whisky trade ? Is this act something-that your children can look back to with pride when you are gone ? If your boys go to drunkards graves and your daughters to ruin , will you 'have any regrets for signing- Daniel Buckley's saloon petition ? What excuse can you give for your signature to this petition when you come before the judgment bar of God ? Mothers the good people of Ouster county are ashamed of yon. The womanhood of Ne braska feels your disgrace and mothers bow their heads in shame. Motherhood is expected to be pure , to protect her children , to be an example of purity and high ideals to her offspring. Mothers of Oconto , do you want your children to follow your ex ample ? "Well ! I call that cool ! " ejaculated Hulllster , gingerly Huutalnlng the In- funt with ono htind , au ho twlHted round to glare ut the car door. " AH he opoktt , the premonitory quiver piiHsud thiough tloor and sent , and the car wheels begun to grind Ulong the rallu. HolllHtor scanned the disap pearing platform ; ho turned with des perate hope toward the cur door ; and , an the train swept into Its long , pul sing rush across the country , ho said In his haste several things which the baby was very fortunately too young to understand. Ho stopped abruptly as the door opened ; but It was only the burly con ductor. "Say ! " crlod Holllster , "you've left a woman behind this child's mother' ' Stop the train ! " The conductor advanced tranquilly down the aisle. "Can't stop ! We're 40 minutes late now. Telegraph back from the next station. " "What's the next station ? " demanded Hollistcr , angrily. "How far ? " "Next station , ForcBtburg. Twenty- three miles. " Holllster gasped nnd looked blankly at the baby. "Wife got off ? " inquired the conduc tor , sympathetically. "She's not my wife , " said Holllster , indignantly. "I never saw her until she dumped this buby in my lap live rain- uteB ago. " The trainman grinned unpleasantly. "Bet you never see her again ! She ain't waltln' for no telegram ! " "Abiurd ! " cried Hollister , in acute alarm. "People don't abandon babies dressed like this one ! " "Don't they , though ? " retorted the conductor. "If you'd seen all I've seen ! Leave any baggage ? " "How should I know ? " protested Holllster. "You might look. " The conductor performed a tour of inspection. "Nary baggaee ! " ho announced , cheerfully. "She was a cute one , one was ! Picked you out for u benevo lent party likely to adopt the child. " "I'm not a benevolent party , " said Holllster , firmly. "If the mother doesn't turn up , I shall , of course , hand the child over to the er the proper authorities. " The conductor stood beside Hollls- ter's seat und nodded thoughtfully. "All right ! Just ao ! Pretty kid , ain't she ? " "How do you know it's a ahe ? " asked rnlllutnr "Tell by the looks of 'em mostly. I've had five of my own. Well , good luck ! Hope she don't cry ! " It did cross Hollloter'i mind that he was letting slip the flrat opportunity of shitting hla charge , but the train man , in spite of his live-fold paternity , did not impress Pollister au precisely the proper authority to-deit ! with the dainty Infant who still dune to his finger. "Ileully , mademoleelle , " he remarked In the euaulug solitude a deux , "you do seem to be right up against it ! " "Ah , " said the baby , in a soft , vi vacious , conversational tone , "ba , ba , v-v-v v ha ! " "Precisely ! " returned Holllster. "You touch the exact core of the U- uatlou. Mam-mum has left us ! " The shining brown eyas surveyed him seriously. Suddenly , with a wide display of toothless gums , the baby laughed. "Oh , if It strikes you as a laughing matter ! " protested Holllster. "Gee , gee , gu , " gurgled the baby ecstatically. It danced Us elastic lit tle body up and down ami made vague , sociable snatches in the air. "You poor little soul ! " HoHister murmured , with an odd tightening of the heart which somehow involved a tightening of hlu arm around the baby. And in all probability cold Charity would take to her impersonal bosom this bewitching mite ! Holllster adopted the conductor' * view. Indeed , the woman's aspect , as a * remembered it , scorned sufllclont to Intplro any sane man with diitruut. The baby continued a broken , inartic ulate monologue of content , and Hoi- Hater meditated many thlngg. The baby squirmed , whimpered , quealed , fretted disdainfully at Hoi- llettr's hetpleia temporizing , and at lait emitted a downright y H. "Oh , don't ! " exclaimed Holllster. "Don't , girlie , doa't ! Somebody'll bear you ! " The baby'a aoft face turned an angry red ; the tender body stiffened wrathfully ; the youn voice rose in credibly In a despairing , IndUfnaat scream. "Oh , stop ! atop I - implore * Hollla- ter. The brown eyes , brimming with tears , fixed on htm a look of acute disappointment und reproach. It cut him to the heart. "Oh , glrllo , girlie , don't ! You know I didn't rnenn It ! You know I wouldn't hurt you for the world ! " How thu reconciliation was effected Holllster never1 quite know. But presently the baby lay trustfully against his shoulder with one wee arm as far us It would go around his neck. "Well , that's settled ! " said Hollls- ter , at length ; "she's not going to the orphan anylum ! " Llko the practical man he was , he begun to consider wayu und means. Thuru WIIH that legacy of his Aunt Margaret , The Income would be just about siilllclent for her support. That being the cuse , did the fitness of things require that she aho'uld hear that inline ? Holllster craned his neck to look down Into .the oft face , nnd very cautiously whispered : "Margaret ! " The buby stirred slightly and snug gled closer to his neck. Ah , she would be the true Margaret ! What u dear little girl she would bo ! How'sweet u schoolgirl a young girl. And wlion she was 17 he would be only No , no ! No more of that ! Aid yet , why not ? A man Is young at 4C. She should live hur own girl-life without a hint of obligation , without the weight of u feather on her choice And If she should at last prefer her young-old guardian Pshaw ! This tiny thing pillowed on his shoulder ! Per haps he would toll her some distant duy. HolltBter's dreaming eyes dwelt on the soft buby form. Partly they saw it , und partly the image of a slender young girl In white , with bright brown eyes , "Forestburg ! " The door slammed open. "Hello ! Wha' chu goln' to do with that kid ? " The baby started brightly awake. "I get out here , " said Holllster , coldly. He gathered up the baby Inoue ouo arm nnd his traps with the other , The mother must , of course , have her chance of repentance , he reflected , "Can't Begin to Tell You How Orate- ful We Are. " walking down the aisle ; still he doubted seriously whether ahe ought in any case to .have charge "Ob , Tom I Oil , Tom I" A slim young womuu la white stood on the station platform. She lifted . toward him impulsive , diaphanous' ' arms nnd bright , brown eyes brimmed with tears and laughter. "The baby's here I The baby's safe ! Oh , Tom ! " Gleefully the baby danced add crowed. An Instant later it plunged ecstatically Into the Impulsive , diaph anous arms to bo smothered In u wild embrace. "Oh , " said the brown eyes , emerging , "how can we ever thank " Holllster felt his hand grasped and wrung. A young man whose blown eyes shone with joy and fellowship was hulling him aa benefuctor and now-found friend. "Can't begin to tell you how grate ful we are , Mr. er HolllHter ? Thanks ! Mr. HolllHtor , 1 want you to meet my sister. And , suy ! 1 want you to meet my wife. She'll bo in on 7:30 : been telephoning like mad. You see , she left her pocketbook in the depot thought she'd have time to get It thought you'd be good to the buby. My wife is u great judge of character. Won't you come up to tea with us , Mr. Holllster ? ( loofl ! Wait a minute , sis , until 1 'phone Qludys , und we'll take Mr. Holllster up to the house. " "I hope you will come , Mr. Hollis ter. " The brown eyes were frankly kind. "My Hlster-ln-law will want * to thunk you herself. We huve been In such suspense ! Oh , Reginald , you little scamp ! Was he good on the train ? Hut he's almost always good. " Holllster , a passively courteous sheath of complex emotions , looked down at her strangely. The mystic bereavement In his eyes struggled with a mystic discovery. The baby's aunt blushed for no reason that she knew of , and her trunk eyes tell. Tom's return relieved the auddon situation. "That's all right ! Give me the baby , Margaret. " Ho led the way , tossing the baby joyously. "I thought the baby wus yours ! " said Hollister. "That is I mean , " he ex plained Incoherently , "er the resem blance , you know , so extraordinary ! But don't thank me ! It was only a pleasure and a privilege to know the baby , I assure you , Miss " She supplied her name , laughing : "How absurd of Tom ! " But Holllster's soul was chanting : "Margaret ! Margaret ! Margaret ! " Too many men prefer muck-raking to honest toll.
