Shively , deputy cOlllmssoller ! ! of public lands and bUlhltngs , wbo is announced as a candidate for election to that office on the republican ticlet. All acquainted - ed with Mr. Shively , and especially - ally thuse who have met him in either a social orbusinesswav , arc unstinted in commetHliJig him as a man worthy and capa ble of any trust. l'be ltltl'Unr.IcAN knows the gentleman and is pleased to learn of his candidacy for this office , the duties of which be is so admIrably qualified to perform. . - An exchange is authority for . the statement that no rich man ever begrudges his poor relatives the virtues wbich they possess. Don't you believe it , neighbor , don't you ever even think of believing - lieving it. Man'y a rich man woul < 1 barter his all in exchange for his poor mother's christian resignation and peace of mind. It is hoped'tbat the agitation brougbt about by the recent disaster - aster in Ohio will not cease until all public buildings arc made as safe as possible. It may be that I public sentiment will become so' ' strong that a change may be made in the construction and egress of federal buildings , as well as state , county and city. REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION. - - - Enthusiastic for Taft , Attendance Large and Harmony Prevailed Tbroulrhout. At two o'clock Thursday the doors of the Boyd opera house in Omaha was thrown open for the reception of repu blican dele- gates. When chairman Hawayard rapped the convention to order every available seat in the large auditorium and galleries were occupied. Custer county's ' delegation - gation of eighteen delcg-ates was fully represented and comps were secured for several visitors from Custer who were provided with seats in thc gal1eries. Daniel Nettleton , Spealer in the last legislature , who was chosen as temporary chairman started the convention otT in splendid humor by his able and enthusiastic speech. Hoyse , Secretarr of the Htate lJanking Board , is being liberally endorscd by the bankers of Nebraska for Comptroller of the Currency. 'l'he move was inagit.ratcd at a special meeting of { he mem- hers of the board of associ a tell banks of I-4incoln 'l'uesday night of last week by endorsing Mr. Hoyse for the position , in case there should he a vacancy. On 'l'hursday following , the bankers of the Omaha Cleari ng House as ociation gave him a unanimous endorsement for the position. Since then Mr. l oyse has received the ullsolicted promise - ise of scores of endorsements from prominent bankers and 'Jthers over the state , as well. as the united support of our state delegation - gation in Congress. 'l'his spontane.ou endorsemcnt of Mr. l oJsc for this high position - tion is gratifying .iqQt only to him but to his matiyrrriends in rolCn Bow where Mr. Hoyse still claims his residence and to where he makes his annual visit to cast his ballot a t the general election. In commemting on the en- dorsement. by the hankers of 14incoln the Lincoln Daily Star Says : " 'rhe splendid record of tbe state during the recent financial - cial storm , during which not a single failure was reported and in which al1 the banks appeared to be in excellent shape , is credited - ited in a measure to Secretary I oyse , and his excellent work wi h the banking board in previous - vious years is taken by the associated - ciated banks as sufficient basis for the unanimous endorsement accorded him. " 'l'he action of the board follows - lows upon the current rumors in regard to the .resignation of Comptroller I idgel.y. As receiver - ceiver for the National Bank of Commcrce , of Kansas City , it is said that Mr. l idgelJ was otTered the presidency of the reorganized - ized 1t1stitution. This would be an important private positIOn and would lend mucb prestige to the reorgani ed bank. No de- fin ate indication of Mr. Ridgely's intentions has been reported , but the Lincoln bankers proposed to provide for any contingency. " A Pathetic Death. The death of Mrs. Benj. Martin , which occurrcd Monday night is , indeed , a very pathetic one. one.The The deceased was among the first , together with husband and three children , who sutTered an attat'k of smal1 pox , about two montbs ago , at which time the family resided about five miles east of Broken Bow. 1'he family al1 recovered from the disease. the clothing and furniture not burned was thoroughly - oughly fumigated and the family moved to a farm 9 milei ! south. When Mrs. Sampson died of the dread dis'ase a few weeks ago leaving six children , one a babe but a week old , no one could be found td take care of it , so Mrs. Martin , through sympathy , consented to do so. Six days after taking the baby home it broke out with the disease that - had taken its mothers life. Last Friday a child was bOrtl to Mr. and Mrs. Martin , but i1 lived only a few h urs , and ih burial occurred Sunday. Or Monday night Mrs. Martin died. , the cause being obstruction oj the intestines. Under the cir. - cumstances , no funeral service ! could be held and the remaim were interred in the Broken Do cemetery by li'uneral Directol l' Cole. This This is a sad hour for Mr , Martin and three motherles ! children and the heartfelt sympa' ' thy of everyone g-oes oU t to then in their severe at11iction. A committee of five was appointed - pointed ou resolutions as follows - lows : J. A. Armour , James Ledwich , E. Taylor , A. H. Cop- sey and L. H. Jewett.
