A CusterlCounty Gentle an , Well Posted in Tax Matters , Says1TheY" " . an , Tells How and Gives a Number of illustrations. , SOMETHING EVERY TAX PAYER SHOULD KNOW You arc told that taxes are as high as they cau be th t the taxes are at the limit. You notice that there is a difference between taxes being to the limit aud the levy beiu ' to the limit. 15 mills is the hmit uuder the statutes for county purposes. but does not include any tax for bonded indebtedness. You can. have a 15 mills levy for county purposes and a bond levy additional. In giving the examples below I to show you how county taxes ; can be increased I have taken the "listed value" from the tax books' - I for Jear 1907. and the "amounts bought for" I took from the deed as now appears of rec rd. In giving the amounts "listed. Cor" . this is supposed to be the one-fifth value of the land as appraised in 1904. It does not sb'ow that anyone was trying to evade his value to lessen his taxes but thought to be a one-fifth , actual value. , By tal < cg , the present cash price as shown' ' by the deed you can readily ell that land is much higher now than in 1904 and your next assessed value is to be one- fifth of its actual value. In this statement I have considered - sidered county tax 'only ; I have not considered the state school , school bond , or township levies , just the county levy only. In March 1907 , Olis M. Newman - man bought the seU of 32-14-21 for $7700.00 as shown by the deed. Now the one-fitth of the purchase value is $1540.00. 1'hlSland - is now listed for $745.00 which is . supposed to be one fifth value .as s.how'n by , the .1907 fax list which at 10 mills ( the present county levy ) would be $7.45 county tax for Mr. Newman to pay. This same land can be listed at $1540.00 ( one-fifth of purchase price ) whicb at 15 mill s would be $23.10. So Mr. New- mans county tax can be increased from $7.45 to : il23.10 and not go beyond the limit. On Sept. 23. 1907 , R. J. Kelly and Jos' ' Fennimore bought the w of sec 3-17-24 for $6596.00 as shown by the contract. One-fifth of the purchase price is $1919.00. ' 1"his " land is listed for the year 1Y07 , for $430.00 ( which is supposed - posed to be th one-fifth value ) as shown by the tax list , which at 1 < 1 mills ( the present county levy ) would be $14.30 county tax for Kelly and Fennimore to pay. Tbis same land can be listed for $1919.00 ( one-fifth of purchase price ) which at 15 mills' would be $28.79. So Kelly and Fenni- mora county tax can be increased from $4.30 to $28.79 and not po beyond the limit. In Feb. , 1907 Herman J. Martin bought nwU 25-17-32 for $4400.00 one-fifth of which is $88'0'.00. This land is listed in 1907 for $247.00 and the county tax at 10 mills is $2.47. This land can be Jisted for $880.00 which at 15 mills would be $13.20. So Martin's county tax can be increased from $2.47 to $13.20 and not exceed the limit. In March 1906 R. E. Brega bought the w ne ! and nw ! and e of sec. 7158 for GOOU.OO ( 'is shown by the deed now on record ) and oue.fifth would be , $1200.0U. ' 1'hls land is now Hstod for the year 1907 for + 432.00 supposed to be the one fifth value when a8sessed , now M32.00 at 10 mills would be $11.82 the present county tax. This same l.nd can e listed for $120000 which at 16 mills would make $18.00 county tax. Mr. Brega's county tax can he increased from $4,32 to $18.00 and not exceed the limit. In Jan. 1907 David 'r. Adc4ms purchased the se ! sec. ,29.20-18 for $6360.00 one fifth of which is 1272.00. This land is now listed . for $576.00 whch ; at 10 mills is $5.76 the present county tax. I his same land can be liB'led for $1272,00 ! and at 15 mills would bo $19.08. You Bee Mr. Adams' county tax can I bo increaBed from $5.7 to U9.08 and not go beyond the limit On Sept. 17 , 1907 Laraon BroB. , . . . ' ' . ' . . bougbt the 80 ! 30-16-26 for + 3200.00 Ono.fifth is $ li4 ! > .00 which nt 16 mills would amount to { ) .20 county tax. 'l'hiB land is liatod nt * 206.00 which at 10 mills is $205 tno present - ent county tax. Now I.llrBOn BrOB county tax caR 00 illcr oBsod from $2,05 to $9.20 aDd n. t exceed the limit 111 Aug. 1906 Anson E. You will BOO that M\ \\'oodworth's county tax ean be in- creB8 d from $6.00 to t24..00 and not go beyond Lho limit In Apdl AO' { ) ; William H. Hughoo' county I ta.x can o increl1stc1 from $ ' ] .80 to $11.63 and 1I0t exceed the hmit. I You can readily aoo that all landa have lDcrcased greatly in this coun. I t ) ' , and at the next assosslUont will bc ssosBod on the above basiB , nnd you will also observe that with an increase in value end tbe levy rnisod frolr 10 mills to 15 mills y ur county - ty tex can be increased from 3 to 4 : times higher than they aru now. An I am Bure that in CUS9 ot division - ion thllt the enormous expense of tro.ulIcribing tbe recoed , building proper county build3nga will rc. quire the limit in vnluo and the limit in levy for many yeara and then Some more.
