county .superi tendents in the

Sup't Pinckney served aH a
member of the Legislative cqm-
mittee appointcd by the last
State Teachers' association. No i
memher of this committee ren-I
dered the st.e . better service
than did Mr. Pinckney. Es-
pecial1y is this true on be mC'as-
ure appropriating $50,000 for tbe
weak , short term districts in the
N.rthern and Central counties of
this state. Sup't Pinc1 ney ap-
pel red before Governor Sheldon
in company with Sup't Stephens.
Inspector A. A. Heed and myself
in behalf of this mtasure wbicb
nleans so mucJt for Custer and all
counties north and west of it.
Tbe great object of this measure
is to provide , so far as possible ,
for seven montbs of school in
those districts voting tbe limit
of taxation and yet nut able to
hold , without state aid , more
than three months of scbool. I
think it WIll be safe to say that
at least one hundred scnool districts -
tricts in Custer county will profit I
by tbis measure. It was Superintendent -
intendent Pinckney's kndwledge
of conditions In his county an
his great desire to secure ai for
these districts in nced of help
tbat made him such a valuable
member of this committee.
Without any disparagement to
any of his predecessors in tbe office -
fice of county supcrintendent of
Custer county. I make bold to
say that 110 man has ever rendered -
dered Custer county greater scr-
vice in this office. This is an office -
fice that sbould be removed from
politics as far as possible , making
! Lcrit the sole test. Wben so
measured. Sup't Pinckney will
never be found wanting.
I sincerelyhope tbat tbe good
people ofCuster county , regardless -
less of political affiliations , will
see to it that Superintendent
Pinckney is continued in this office -
fice for another term at least. He
can do much more efficient service -
vice in bis second term tban in
his first. Experience in tbis of-
'fice counts for something even
tbougb tbe best qualified man in
the sate were filling it.
Yours for tbe public schools of
Custer county and Nebraska.

Faithful Trust Reposed in Him.
Hon. M. B. Reese was born in
Macoupin county. Illinois. in
1839 , a farmer boy , and doubtless :
would still be a farmer with a
rancb 100 miles..square for a
workshop somewhere in western
Nebraska. had b not injured an I
arm about tbe time be ms ready
to brancb out. and this turned
bis attention to another profession -
sion , for in those days a farmer
didn't get to use a riding plow
or cut cornstalks by proxy as
thev do now. Wbile he was
living on the farm Judge Reese
completed tbe course prescribed l
by the country scbools , and then
worked bis way through a semi.
nary near his home. He was
admitted to practice and remove \
to Osc.eola. la. . 111inois having
become entirely too eastern fOI
him. He lived in Iowa from
1865 to 1871. when be beard I
the call of tbe prairies and reo
. moved to Plattsmouth. where h
again hung out blS sbingle.
Practically tbe entire life oj
! Judge Recse in Nebraska has
been spent under the limelight.
He was a member of the con-
i I stitutional convention in 1875
I . district attorney of tbe FoucH
,
judicial district for three termsj
supreme jtHl e. and dean of the
law depntment : of the state
u.niversity. All positions of the
greatest importancc. How well
he has done his duty and how I
faithful he has been to the trust
repos.d : in him , is answered by
the endorsement given him by
his party at the late primary
election. Juage Heese was sltnv
to ask for this endorsement. and
only al10wed thc use of his name
aftcr many newspapers and many
pcople had cal1ed upon him to
again assume leadership.
