. The rest of the country will
I watch the experiment of Georgia
with its public utilities conl1ni -
sion. It is the most radical ever
i
enacted. 1'he commission will
have the power to regulate the.
rates on railroads , street rail ways
and all transportation companies ,
including express , telegraph and
telephone companie9 , all light
and power conipallies , docks and
wharves , terminals and stations.
Its acts are to have the same I
force as legislative measures. :
The commission is also given :
authority of courts in that it may. .
impose fines for violation .of its
own rnlings. It is even claimed
the federal courts cannot suspend
the orders of the commission by
. injunction , The law is wider in
scope than the New York bill.

When the lamentations last
spring over the tardy weather
\ were loudest the IhuUDI.ICAN endeavored -
deavored to bring cheer and comfort -
fort to the farmers with the
statement that nature always
. provided a full season for the
, growth and development of crops.
t Nature has certainly made good
this year. The crop was slow in
starting , but lhe growth was so
reniarlcably rapid that its maturity -
ity will be but Jittle later , if any ,
than in averag-e years. 'rhe man
who has { , inned his faith in the
soil has had his reward.

'rhe tendency of human nat.ure
to shift the responsibilitv onto
someone else is shown to a
mar1ed degree in the how ] of the
Wall street crowd-now reaping
the whirlwind for the wind they
have sown. Instead of assuming -
ing the responsibility for the
disasters following their own
misdeeds they continue to blame
it on the Hoosevelt adminis-
tra tion.
_ _ _ h. _ _
Wall street continues to regard
itself with extreme seriousness -
ness in respect to its influence
on the comercial Hfe of the
nation. While its flurries and
excitements undoubtedly influence
new enterprises to a large degree ,
the time has long' since passed
when its coHcs make all the rest
of the country double up in pain.
Everyone can't be a philanthropist -
pist , but all an' to a certain
d gree. Everything that helps
the individual should be b.ne.
ficial to the public in a general
way. It is difficult for a man to
work his ownself interest with.
out incidentally aiding th (
. public.
It is reported that the primar )
. cost two dollars per vote in Knm
county. Huhl that's easy whel
compared to the price U. S ,
Senator Wm. H. Clark , of Mont. ,
paid for 'em. Tew tousan' pe :

Bought a New Automobile.
J. t ; . McGraw , representing the
Maxwell a 1tomobile , has becn
preaching to Dr. Pennington and
endeavoring to have him pur-I
chase one of the best autos manufactured -
factured - the Maxwell - and
finally succeeded in getting him
to consent to go to 01lHlha aud
I
inspect the "masheen. " I.Just
Sunday was the day set to go
and they went-Agent McGraw ,
Dr. Penuington , . Lester Corlett
and James Pennington.
Arriving in Omaha Monday
morning they visited the garage
where only one Maxwell w s left ,
but a car load expected in a few
days. However , the one was
duly warmed up and after tour-
in ! ! Omaha for the space of an
hour Dr. Pennington informed
the general in command that he
had sold a machine and possession -
sion was given at once.
At 3 o'clock Monday afternoon
the party left Omaha for home
in the "bilious" and at supper time
they had reached Duncan , a
distance of 101 miles. Here they
put up for the night. starting
again at 8:30 : a. m. , 'ruesday ,
reaching Broken Bow at 8:30 : that
evening having covered the
distance of 150 miles that day.
Not a hitch nor kick was made
by the auto during the trip and
only six gallons of gasoline con-
sumed. The doctor is more than
well pleased with his purchase
and , having experimented with
several autos , is fully satisfied
that for size and price the
Maxwell has no equal.
