All through the western states arc thousands who have profited by the growing - ing of alfalfa , but not many of them know that this was introduced - duced into the United States from South America by Harrison Parltman who died recently' at Topeka , Kans. Hardly a line appeared concerning the work done bv this modest man , yet how far re ching are the results of , his work ? Alfalfa has done much for this country. All through thc agricultural department - partment of this government are other unassuming workers , laboring - ing to better the conditions of the agriculturalists and make this country richcr and plcasanter as an abode , and thcy deserve great credit for their persistency and faithful labor for their , fellow beings. Now comes the announcement tliat Senator Spooner , of Wisconsin - consin ha3 resigned his scat. S oner was , at one time , charged with being interested with the great trusts , but it has been discovered - : covered that it was an amendment offered by this senator , and strongly advocated by him , which enabled the government to action on the whole seventy-three of the constituent corporations of the Standard Oil company in a single judicial district , regardless - less of their headquarters. The more Senator Spooner's record is looked into the better representative - sentative of the people he seems to have been-better even than many have seen fit to give him credit for. Fred M. Bryner , who "plugs for Oconto" , as editor of tha l e- gister , will soon have a source of revenue with which to pa.r the expenses of publishing a paper , when delinquent subscribers fail to respond , having' been rlcom- mended 'tS postmaster at that hustling burg , to succeed a lady who is "red-headed" probably - now -if she wasn't prior to the an- nouncement. Of course such a ; procedure on the part of Bro. Bryner is not , in high society ethics , considered gallantry , but he evidently believes with the poet that "all's fair in love"-and getting to be a p. m. The failure of churches to pay ministers rcnumerative salaries has caused a scarcity in the sup- ply. Ministers are always urged to marry so their wives can assist - sist in the work , but the small stipend paid in many churches is . insufficient to support the couple. \ I The clerics are not neces ! > arily preaching for the money alone there is in the job , but they are compelled to have sufficient salary to live with some degrce of com- fort. A fight is being made against the Inter-state Commerce commission - mission that it is overstepping its powers. The contention is made by opponents that the verv " name of the commission limits it"s powers of investigation and the . . c.ommission has no authority to delve into the private business life of heads of railway corporations - tions brought before it. Sarah Bernhart is accused by a French publisher of faking her memoirs. Sarah's real memoirs will probably never be published -with her consent. Moth balls will soon be displayed - played on the drug store counters , and then we will know for sure that "spring has came. " H.y Balelng and Corn Shelling. I have purchased the O. E. Without a struggle , since the le islature passed the 2-cent per mtle rate bill-which was signed by Governor Sheldon and becamc a law yesterday-the railroad companies bowed to the inevitable - able and sent new rate sheets in conformity with the law to all ticket selling stations in Ne- braslm with instruction to begin selling this morning under its provisions. It was generally supposed the railroad companies would test the : law , and their prompt submission suggest that after a few months they will go before the commission - mission with figures showing that their passenger trains cannot be operated upon that rate , except at a loss. Of course it is generally known that the profit in railroading is derived principally from freight traffic and another theory of the companies acquiescing to the passenger rate so complacently was along the lines of martyrdom so they could IInplore for leniency if the legislature came at them too strong for reduction of freight rates. But be the sttppositiotls what they may and the theories wild and varied , the fact remains that the 2-cent per .ile passenger rate is now in full force and effect in Nebraska and-we shall see what we sec. Obituary. Anna Walton was born at Pittsfield , N. Y. , February 14 , 1815. On January' 1 , 1832 , at New Berlin , N. Y : , she was united in marriage with David Steere , to which union twelve children were born , six of whom are sti1l living. David Steere died March 17 , 1870 , and on February 24 , 1872 , she was married to Harlow Walton , at Iowa Falls , Iowa. Sixteen ) 'ears later , in 1886 , they moved to Broken Bow , ebfaska , and here Mr. Walton died September 9 , 1900 , since which time she has resided with her step-children , 'Po A. Walton and Hattie E. Speake in this city ; F. A. Walton ot Arcama , also bei g a step-son , who , with two sons , J. D. and C. H. Steere , of Iowa Falls , were present at the funeral services and burial. Last S"turday , March 2 , she was feeling- better and more cheerful than usual , although just convalescing from a severe cold , but that night at about 12 o'clock she was ti1ken with shortness - ness of breath and choking spells. Aphysician was called and all that could be was done to prolong hel life , but without avail and at abou t 4 o'clock , March 3 , 1907 , her spirit took its flight. Funeral services , attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances were held at the M. E. church at 10 o'clock yesterday - day , conducted by Rev. Early , of the Christian church. None ever entered her home without a warm welcome not none left without feeling the warmth of a genuine hospitality. Advanced age dU not destroy the charm of a kind , indulgent disposition nor did it diminish her unselfish solicitude for her friends and loved ones. Adhering to the faith of her fathers sh ( ; united with the Methodist churcl ] in early life nd later with the I Christian church and sh ( ; loved to atrend its services whet ] health permitted-as she did only a week prior to dea the While she has continued to enjoj the society of friends and chil. dren , she has for several years. . realized that her active life waE over and with resignahotJ awaited the Divine summons. . - . . . . - . . - , . , 1 " . . ' _ ! LbltJ _ County Dlvhlon. Lincoln , Ne , Feb. 4 , 1907. Editor Rm'uDLIcAN , Broken Bow , Neb. DUAl { Sm-Apparcnlly : the question of division in Custer will not calm and property owners must continually bring forward arguments and facts to show the advantages of maintainiug the county as it is now constituted. It may he of interest to learn that iu IIOC" Custer county attained - tained lIIHS'I' place among the counties of thc state in the total yield of corn. It'or some tiille Custer has held second place in the total corn ) 'ield , ranking' next to Lancaster , but in 190 ( , Custer passed Lancaster not only in total productor but in average yield per acre. 'l'he average yield in T4ancaster being 32 bushels - els while Custer produced 35 bushels per acre. For some time Custer has ranked 1irst in the value of total agricultural pro- ducts. In alfalfa Custer stands third among the counties of th state and this crop is the sheet anchor for the ' county's pros- perity. The Department of Agriculture has demonstrated that alfalfa adds $100 to the value of food i'l plant everv . acre of land . where it is grown. At .this time capitalists are quite shy of investments in Cus- ter. While 4 and ,5 per cent mon y is available In the eastern part of the North Platte country , the line is drawn through the center. of Boone county as the western boundrv . for the low interest rate. , Custer needs more transportation - tion lines rather than c unty capitals and by standing together - er and holding the countv in the front rank where it stancisttoday , capital will be attracted to the richest agricultural county. in Nebraska. Yours truly , W. S. DnLANO.
