THE ElfCTION.
'l'lte "fondeit ! hope that ever
sprung eternal" in the breast of I
a fnsionist or del110crat has been
bad I , } ' shattered by the returns
(1'0111 ( ' 1'uesday's election and they
are the meekcst-Iooking' lot of
American citi ens with an alienable -
able right that ever gallupcd
down the bonlevarc1-before the
returns turned 'cm down.
Not only is this the situation I I
in Custer county and Nebraska ,
but in every state in the Union
in which an election was held.
1i'rom the returns now med ,
correct and incomplete , it is
conceecled by thc fusionists that
Sheldon , republican , ha3 carried
Ncbraska by 12,000 ovqttShellen-
barg-er , fusion , for "governor.
They also concede a majority of
eighty-seven republicans in the
legislature ; sixty-seven being a
majority. 'l'his means the election -
tion of Norris Brown , the choice
of the republican state conven-
tiOIl , for United States senator.
In Custer connty the campaign
was a very quiet affair , only the
act \'e politicians anl1 nominees
-scem1l1g1y-a w re an , election
was to be heM this hIl , but the
returns indicate that the voters
were \'cry much a wake on election -
tion da ) ' and that they went to
the polls and voted.

In the Army and Navy club ,
Washington , Gen. Chaffee told
this story of Gen. Carr , says the
New York Tribune. At the outbreak -
break of the civil war Carr left
' 1'roy as a colonel. His first
eng gement was at Big Bethel ,
and he was a p1'etty green officer.
It happ ned that confederates
were in ambush in the immediate
neighborhood , and jrom a safe
hiding place they opened fire on
the northerners. Carr , so the
story runs , instantly put SP4fS , to
his horse and dashed up ' 'fo a
group of officers. Excitement
and bewilderment were apparent
upon his young face as he ap.
preached the p'arty. "They. are
firing on my regimcnt ! " he
shouted. ' "M v Godl Now what
is t'o be done ? ' "
