concerning the fah e report that
Norris Brown , republican candidate -
date for United States senator ,
was indebted to the insolvent
Kearney National Bank , at the
time its affairs were settled , on
notes due for , money deposited
, therein by former St : te 'rrea'ur-
er Bartley , and that the state
lost 1ts money through Brown's
I repudiationof hisnotes. Hobert
Paync , of Nebraska City , wa ! ' !
rece1\-r , and settled the affairs
of this bauk. He is a lifelong
democrat , and bis integrity is
known throughout the. state. To
learn he exact truth I wrote him

DnAR SIR : Among the assets
of the Kearney National Buk , .
placed in my hands as rece1ver ,
were notes amounting to about
$300 , signcd by Norris Brown.
Thcse notes had no connection
whatever with the deposit of
$6,000 by ex-State Treasurer
Bartley. As I rccollect the facts
they are about as follows : Norris -
ris Brown owed the bank as above
stated. He claimed thc bank
owed him au account for attorneys -
neys fecs , and wished to offset
his indebtedness to the bank by
the bank's indebtcdness to him.
Equitably , it looked to me as
though such a compromise would
be just. These notes , with other
assets of the bank , were duly
advertised for sale in the Kearney -
ney Hub , and sold with other
assets of the bank -March ,
1898. I do not recollect who
bought the notes or the a'mount
paid for them. A common-sense
interpretation of the transaction
would b that Brown received
from the Kcarney National Bank
for services , as claimed bv him ,
an amount equal to the (1ilIcrence
between the face value 'of his
notes and the amount paid for
the notes at public auction.

also published by Robert Pai'nc ,
receiver , in an interview glvelf
to thc Nebraska City Daily 'rri-
bune , October 6 , 1900.
Without making inquiry of
Mr. Payne to asccrtain the facts' ,
and disregarding the truth which
had been published , T. S. Allen ,
chairman of the democratic state
central committec , has been diligently -
gently publishing and circulat-
throughout the state annony-
mous handbills containing th1s
false report. I appeal to every
fair minded man , regardless of
party affiliations , o resent the
disreputablc methods employed
by the democraltc state central
committee in their efforts to defeat - .

regulation of freight rates by
the election of a democratic
