GeUinc Better Snlaries.
Competition in bidding for
mail contracts , particularly in
rural districts , IS fast becoming
a lUa tter tlf history. accord ing to
postollice officias. ] li'ormerlJ
Uucle Sam found carriers for
many of t he smaller rolties for
pr < Hlically lIolhing , but ill nearly -
ly every such caRe tlll mlln who
holds the joh npwadilj'S rccc'c ! ;
a more or less adeq t1a lc COlli pen-
sation. Under the old reglll1C ,
the most extraordinary condition
of alTairs often cxisted. li'or instance -
tance , the mail carrier at Lal < e
Charles , Ia. , was under contract
for fOl1r Jcars to pay to the gov-
crnmcnt the S11111 of $50 a year
for carrying the mails by steamer
a distance of fifty-five miles
threc times each week , the , value
to the carrier being found , of
course , in the business standing
which he derived from the ser-
vice. 'fhis contract has just
cndcd and the new incumbent is
to receive a salary of $2000 a ycar
for doing just the same wdrk
that cost his predecessor $50 annually -
nually , A still more curious instance -
stance of the old order is found
In the case of 'West Bndgcton ,
Vt. , where the carrier , for going
twelve times a week to Woodstock -
stock , six miles away , reccived
the princely renumeratian of one
cent each ycar for his services.
His successor now receivcs $100.
A former carrier of Freedom , N ,
II. , also distinguished himself by
carrying thc mails several miles
daily for two aad a half mills a
year. The job now pays $150.
Altogether , Uncle Sam's letter
carriers are coming into newer
and better conditions to which
the automobile as a future means
of distribution forms a very attractive -
tractive if not yet actually existing -
ing addition.
Soulh Omaha Stock Market.
1'here has been a good heal thy
tone to thc cattle trade the past
week , and for the most part all
kinds of killing steers have
shown but little change on ( ' way
or the other. Prices now arc but
little different than at the high
time a couple of weel < s ago.
Good dry lot steers are scarce and
selling at $5.50 and $6,25 ; fair to
good $5.00 and $5.50 ; good range I
beeves $4.50 and $5.25 ; fair to
good $4.00 and 54.50. Cows and
heifers have shown the most
improvement , and while the market -
ket closed up about a dime lower
last Friday , values still are -tOc
higher than two weeks ago.
Good to choice lcinds are seiling I
at $3.25 amI $3.60 ; fair to good
$2.65 to 53.15 ; canners anti cutters -
ters $1.75 and 52.50 , Stockers
and feeders have changed but
little. There has been good
inquiry and good easy movement ,
more pa.rticula ly on t e light
and mehum weIghts whIch have
been rather lo. . . . . sale at times.
Good to choice heavy feeding
steers are selling at $4.25 and
$4.50 ; fair to good $3.90 and $4.-
25 ; good to choice light and
medium weights $3.85 and $4.15 ;
fair to good $3.40 and $3.75.
The hog market today under
moderate offerings ; in fact li ht
offerings at this point , is a dime
hiuher. Heavies sold at 56.00
and $6.10 ; medium 56.10 and
56.20 and $6.35.
