'J're l\lIrer- J. S. MolYlieallx. Mr. Bryan failed in New York of being an unqualified success. Uuder the circumstanccs that in , itself , was failure. 'l'he object , uf bis reception and address was , to make him appear as the' ' destined leadcr of the Amcrican peoplc. lIe was to appeal to both the national judgmcnt and I imagination. ' + 'he eve t was marred by a sencs of l111stalcs , not one of thcm considcred in itself , but in the mass lcaving quite the opposite impression trom that intended. Honor was shown one who has descrvcd wel1 of .his country , but the- tribute " fell far short of that which a true rulcr might inspire. Ilis utterance - ance was , in many passagcs , j noble and wisc , but as a whole I amI in many parts it was open to : criticism. Every excuse may be made for Mr. Bryan' ! > failure of , 11 s : gnal uccess. ' 1'he pity is Ti I that excuscs have to be made. , 'rhc longcr the incident is re- rl fleeted upon the stronger will be the disinclination to cntrust Mr. Bryan amI his counsellors with the direction of national affairs . in a pcriod so critical in national histury. Many of the mistakes \ were made at this time and which 'I Mr. Bryan was unable to prevent , h so would mistakes be made by ' the assislants of his admmistra- 1'1 tion and he would be incapable II of preventing them. Mr. Bryan's f procession through New York I was not a triumph. Outside the Bowery and streets of that sort , comparatively few welcomed him. Although 60,000 applications had been made for admission to the great ball where he spoke , many of the fortunate possessors of tickets stayed away or came late or departed early , so that the first part of his address was interrupted - terrupted and the really spclendid close was spolen to a decimated audience. Fundamental was the mistake of ( leparting from the original plan of the reception and address. 'l'he great and popular commercial ho < 1y wluc1t planned i the reception would , if it had I , be n allowed to do so , have kept ; the affair free from partizanship \ and would have allowed Mr. Bryan to appear as the representative - presentative aud champion of the people generally. Only in that character can he hope for success in his ambition to be the J national leader. As it was , the 1 democracy was rampant , and j Mr. Bryan QY making a partizan , spcech Hung away one of the j greatest opportunities-perhaps 1 the greatest opportunity-of his life.III favor the control of the I trnnk lines by the government and the ownership of all other railroads by the state government - ment , " said Mr. Bryan. In an instant thousands of voices were raised and faces turned toward the side of the building-opposite ' the speake'rs stand-where William - liam Randolph Hearst sat. "Three cheers for Hearst" was I the cry that swelled until Mr. Bryan's voice was drowned anr1 he twas unable to continue for several minutes. The intended oration for Mr. Bryan turned out a triumph for Mr. Hearst. Such is democracy , full of internal strife and with the representative of its ideals. Mr. Bryan's address - dress lacked the thrill1ng eloquence - ence which has made him famoHs. . - w. Huoton recovery by lCoplng the bowolo regular with Aycr'G Pills. - - - = Succcss in such an addre ss.- under the circumstances-was impossible in any cause. Hut Mr. Bryan's treatment' of the isH1es ! lacked thoroughness. It wa ! > a suggestion of s01l1e things wh ich it maybe desirable to do , not at all a statesmanlike declaration - claration of what these things arc and by whal consistent policy and pract i.cal mct hods t hey are to be achelvcd. 'l'here was one feature in the receplion of Mr. Br'an in New York which was not a failure , howevcr , and that was 1\Ir. Bryan's prescnce. 'lhe republican reprcscntalive ; onvcntioll for this district is called to meet in this city Saturday - day , the 15th , to nominate two candidates for the legislature. rL'his evcnt is one of great importance - tance to the republican party. Not only are the principles l1unciated by the republican : tate convunl on to be enacted into law , but a United States Scnator is to be electcd by the legislature. It is a matter of importance that men are nominated - nated on the republicau ticket that are in sympathy with the party pmgress and have the con"- lidence of the public , to assure lheir clectioJl. No on c , whose lection would be doubtful , ' ! hould be considered. . . - - - ' - - - It has bcen well said that the ideal government - for this country esp cially-is by the pcople , of the people and for the people : But have you noticed how hypocritical some of the alleged leaders are ? 'They say they want the people to govern , but : if evcrything does not go their way , how many excuses hey find to try and show that it IS not the pcople who have spoken. It is hard to please agi tators u111ess you allow them to have their , own way in every- thingl and then the people-the common people-find that their will is thwarted-if the agitators are satisfied. Mr. Bryan is sure to be kept busy if he does as he promises and I'will discuss that subjcct later. " He has promised this in more than a dazen cases , but it is general believ d he bas promised thusly in ordcr to evade the questions and tumble into another - other jack-pot like tbe one in New York when he said : "I believe in the government control - trol of the trunk lines and the state ownership of all other railroads.II ' Just because some m n-lilw Hipple of Philadelphia-plays he is a good church man in order to ( ob and swindle the confiding -is no evidence that church members general1y are not to be , trusted. In fact , the exception may prove the rule. Many a man in thcse days appears to worl { on the credulity of the moral people in order .to achieve his own ends-this has even bccn the case here in Nebraslm. ' 1'he compulsory , rest day for II'rance becamc effective September - ber 1st when the president issued a proclamation to that effect. 'l'his made it necessar.r for all to 1 rest one day in each wcek-or I rather to obstain from the duties : of their rcgular emploj'ment. ' The opcratiQn of this law will be. . watched with much interest. In the statement of A. C. Shallcn berger , of Alma , setting forth hisexpeuses connected with securing the nomination for governor on the democratic ticket , no entry is made for railroad fare. 'rhe fact , however , proves neither that he rode on a pass or that he walled to Lincoln from I-Iarlan county.-Grand Island Indepcml- ent. i I . . . - - - - - - - - - - - . . . . . . - . , . .
