It is IIOW quite gllIerally known that I am a candidate for thc
nomination for l epresentative from the Iith Heprescntative ( tis-
trict , subject to the will of the republican district convcntion , alltl
in keeping with my conscience and a duty I feel pressing upon me
that the people should know , that the delegates to the Heprescnta-
tive convcntion should aiso Imow where I positivel ) ' stand on public
questions concerning the welfare of the people. ' 1'0 those who know
, me best and have kept in touch with me year aftcr ) 'ear , either in
person or through the columns of my newspaper , these lines are
unneccssarYi but the vastness of the territory that Compriscs Cus-
tcr and Logan counties , which mal < e up the 56th l eprcsentative
district , there are many people with whom I have no acquaintance ,
and a statement of the facts willllot be out of place.
M v candNacy was announced , not at the "urgent request of
friends , II but solely on m , } ' own responsibility , after carelul consideration -
sideration and the experience gained in being in close touch with
the last legislature a an employee in the $ enate. No ring of poli-
tiians : are backingmy candHlac.r that I have an ) ' knowledge of , and
my candidacy will come before the convention to be accepted or re-
jectcd by the delegates.
I stand where I have always stood unswervingly in favor of a
square deal. To secure my nomination , or my election If nominated
I shall surrender nothing that I conscientiously believe. I would
rather "pursue the even tenor of my way" as a citizen in the private
walks of lifc , with thc resJ.ect of my friends and neighbors who
place their confidence in me , than go to the legislature : with a chain
upon my brain , to be subservient to the will of any corporation or
political boss. I am absolutely and unalterabl ) ' opposed to the
methods the corporations have pursued in blocking legislation that
favors enl ) ' a square deal to the people.
'I'he real issue that confronts the peoplc of the 5Mh l epresen-
tative district , as well as cvery other district in Nebraska is , "Shall
the People or shall the Corporations C , ntrol the Legislatur ? " I am
not now , nor have I ever been in favor of putting corporations
out of husiness , or ( liscriminating" against their j st rights , but I
havc alwa's believed and maintained that they should be prohibited
from discriminating against others ; that the humblest citizen of
this commonwealth , the merchant in our cities and towns , thc
farmer who tills the soil and supplies the , markets with the products
of the field and range , and the consumer who is forced to pay for
the necessitics of life at the exorbitant prices demanded br. the
trusts and all other illegal combinations that are choking out honest
competition , should have protection against these illegal combines
who go hand in hand in their conspired robbery from the people.
'rhe republicans of Custer county , in their recent county convention -
vention , commends President Roosevelt for "his fearless , consis en t
and patriotic efforts in securing the enactment into laws measures
which effectually regulate and control the great corporations of the
nation , to the end that manifest abuses and unjust discrimination
between the individual and local corporations mIght be corrected. "
'rhey also go on record as endorsing the hproposed amendmcnt to
the constitution , Jroviding for n elcctive railway commission , if
elected , to fix , adjust , and equalize freight rates within the state
. and ' prevent discriminations , rebates 'and all favoritism. " 'rhey go
still' further and "demand the passage of a law abolishing railroad
passes , believing that the giving of frC'e transportation is in expression -
sion of favoritism and detrimental to the 1I1terests of both the pass
giver and pass taker , and also the business and commercial interests -
ests of the state. "
If I am nominatcd for the legislaturc it must be upon a platform -
form as emphatic as the platform just quoted. It must" be a platform -
form that means what it says-a platfurtll in fact as well as in
namc , and my whole energy , voice and \'ote will back up the principles -
ples set forth in the platform upon which I am elected.
This statement is made in a spirit of fairness to all , that those
who oppose these prInciples may not lie deceived in me , and those
who favor them will know exactly where I stand.

mis-apprchension regarding the
provisions of the estray laws of
this statc , and for the information -
tion of our readers the following
brief has been made :

Section 1. It shall be lawful
for any person holding land in
this state bv deed , title bond or
, lease for one or more years , and
being in possession thereof , to
take up an estray horse , mule , . or
ass , meat cattle , sheep or sW1I1e
found within his enclosed premo
ises at any season of the year ;
and any estray fouud around the
prcmises of11) ' lessee or free.
