tion made by Go , and as a
justification of this , the differences -
ences existing among 'l'heists
thcmselves as regards their
Deity. Whilst the int1uence of
the passions may not ordinarily
gencrate oubts , there can bc no
question that it hclps to pcr-
petuate thcm amongst the mass
of men. Paschal remarks that if
mathematical truths imposed
restraints upon passion there
would bc found men to ( Juestion
them. If man can only emancipate -
pate himself from the restraint
that is imposed by religion by
calling in qucstion thc existence
of God , or what is practically the
samc thiug , thc possibility of
Imow1l1g Him if lIe docs exist , if
man canthus silcnce the remor-
ses of conscience , what a triumph
for human passion. (2) ( ) A
sccond cause is the pride of in-
te1ect ! , which will not believe
anything above its comprehension -
sion , even on the testimony of
Go , and discredits the sacred
rccords lIe has left us. It bc-
lieves frecly in lg own theorics

tion Science and revealation.
Agnosticism. has endeavored to
render itsclf respcctable by an
aJIiance with sciencc an an en. .
eavor to show opposition between -
tween it and religion. But this
effort must prove abortive.
'rruth is consistent with itself.
All truth like all power comes
from God. What is rel1giously
true cannot be scicntificalJ.r false
and what is scientifically true
cannot be religiously false. God
spelks ! in the scripturcs an in
the illuminatcd MS8. of the
sIdes. All faith must be reason-
abte. All reason is ( li vine. Our
God icl the God of reason and of
Revealation.
'rhe most learnc men that
e\'er existed in pagan and Christian -
tian Ages have bcen religious
men. If there has been opposition -
tion betwecn Scicnce and Hcli-
gion it is not because of science
but of individual theories put
forward as such by men who believing -
lieving that Go is unknowable ,
put Him and Ilis revelation aside
without examination. Thus a
man having collectcd a few facts
undertakes to explain them by a
thcory invented by himself.
Should the theory contradict
revelation , so much the worse
for revelation. Now this theory
is not science , but the offspring
of man's brain , for which he
claims our act of faith. We
must lay the cherished doctrine3
of our religio n at the feet of the
last theorist or be accused of a
fear of science. We have only I I
to wait a little while and a few
more discovcred facts will upset
such science and confirm revela-
tion.
tion.We
We sl ould not however , ( lis-
courage theori ing if only rationally -
ally conducted. A man's theory
is the child of his brain , and hc
devotes himself to 1t progress
and development In Joing so ,
he frequently mattes important
discoveries which are preserved
in the treasury of sciencc after
the death of the theorist and his
theory. ' ! 'hus the iscoveries of
Mr. Darwin have been many an .
valuable , though his t eory is
now abandoncd by some of the
greatest scientists of the world ,
as unsustained.
What we object to is the forcing -
ing of unprovcd theories on us ,
as f the ) ' were scientific truths.
Wc will freely admit them as
mcre theories until proved or dis-
proved.

IIis J minence first place. He
opened the Congress with a pray-

a profession of faith-a universal
faith In God.
Not a man of all these various
religions of the world , of every
tribe and tongue and people , who
did not cry out to God with him :
"Our li'athcr who art in II aveu ,
hallowed be 'l'hy liame. 'l'hy
Kinndom come , thy will be done
on earth as it is in Heaven. "
Not a man who di not feel his
dependence on God's provi ence

man who had not sinne and
been sinned against ; and hence
the chorus : "li'orgive us our

who trespass against us. " Not
a man who (1i not feel that
whilst he live he was in danger
of sin and its conscquent punishment -
ment , and hence the closing
praJer : "Lead us not into temptation -
tation , but elivcr us from evil.

But it is urged by Agnostics
that the God of Ju aism and
Christianity is an exclusive and
unjust God , an , therefore no
God at all. A Go who reveals
himself only to a portion of I.lis
creatures ; to the Jews ex lu ing
the Gentllcs ; to particular sects
Protestants excluding other sects
and the Catholics ; to the Catholics -
ics excluding Jews. Gentiles and
Protestants from salvation.
Where therefore there is so much
exclusiveness and bigotry , is it a
won er thai intelligent men
should be Agnostics ?
Such an indictment as this if
the counts of it were established ,
would be fatal to Christianity ;
but tLc question is are the
charges founded on the doctrines
of either Judaism or Christianity -
ity ? God favored it is true , in a
particular manner the Jewish
pcople , but di He therefore reject -
ject the Gcntile nations ? No ,
He was the Go of the Gentiles
as well as of the Jews. He calls
the Gentile king Cyrus , His ser-
vaut. He slys : \
"I will go before my servant
Cyrus loosening the lions of
lungs , breatdng in pieces the
gates of brass. " The man with
whom God , vas so well pleascd
and by whom He was so well
glorified an who was a type of
Christ Himself , the patriarch
Job , was no Jew , but a Gentile.
There were great and holv men
in these outside nations ; who
served God accor ing to the
lights the , possessed and are now
happy with him in Hcaven.
'l'he Scriptures of the Old Law
bear testimcny to the fact that
Go had care of the Gentile
nations and called frequently on
these Gentiles to praise IIis name.
In the New testament , Christ
assures us that "many should
come from the east and west and
shall sit down with Abraham
and Isaac and Jacob in the
Kingdom of beaven , but the
children of the kingdom shall be
cast into exterior darkness.
'l'here shall be weeping and
gna hing of teeth. "
With regard to the differences
among Christians , I do not
hclieve that any enlightened
mcmbere ot an ' protestal1t denomination -

mcmbcrs of other denominutions

cause lor Agnosticisn must lose
much of its force.
B t why should there not be
Christian union ? How much
have. we not in common ? Belief
in God and in Ilis Providence-
belief in future rewar s and
puhishments-and above all-
belief and hope and love in th
great unitive power of the world
-Jesus Christ. Let us remember
the inci ent related in the ninth
chapter of St. Luke's Gospel.
when the Apostle St. John said
to Our Lord , " 1'hat there was
a man casling out devils in Thy
name , and we forbade him ,
bccause he followeth not with us. "
And Jesus said , "Forbi him not.
For he that is not against you is
with you. "
I believe the first great factor
in the reunion of Christendom
will be a greater personallov.e
for Our Lord. It is the sentiment -
ment on which there is most
accord and seems like the fulfilling -
filling of the prophecy : "And
I , when I shall be lifted up , will
draw all things to Myself. "
The remedy for Agnosticism ,
and all the relig10us ifferenccs
am\ \ . dividing isms of the day is
the same now as in the ays of
St. Paul.
The religion of Jesus is in its
true sense Heligion of humanity ,
and around him should gather all
the chil reu of men. It is re-
mar1 < able that now even thc reformed -
formed Jews have learned to
esteem 111m and publicly glory
in the fact that lIe was one of
their race. And the Agnostics
of our day , who even knew Him
in the past , o at times irresistibly -
, tibly proclaim His praise.
Henan , once the Sulpitian student -
ent , whose heart was warm with
the personal love of Christ ,
abandoned Him for the errors of
Agnosticism and wrote a life of
Jesus inten ed to dethro\1e \ Him.
Yet , in describing the last act
of the story beautiful the old fire
of love seemed to burn for a
moment in his heart and he cried
out to his dead Lord in t hcse
words :
"He pose now in thy glory ,
noble founder 'l'h , worle IS
finished , thy divit1tty is established -
lished l' ear no more to see the
edifice of thy lahors fall by any
fault Henceforth , h yotHl the
