'fhe B. & M. railroad had more
than its share of hard luck the
first of the week. ' 1'he depots at
Alliance and Scneca were burned
Sunday , the fire heing ignited by
sparks from the locomotives. It
is report d the depot at I avenna
. caught 1 re on 1\1onday , but the
.1 fire was put out before much
damage was done.
'fhe Burlington Hotel at Ravenna -
enna was burned down , caused by
sparks from the engine. The
Dierks Lumber Yard , which is
located just north of the hotel
was only saved by hard work and
good management. As the
buildings north of the lumber
yard are all fram structures there
would have been little hope of
saving thc town had the lumber
yard b en burned.
'l'he blow is' likely to fall harden
on Havenna as the railroad company -
pany has stopped Improvements
on the yards there with the view
of removing the division station
from that point which makes it 1
I doubtful whether they will re-
J build the eating honse. It was
a splendid huilding worth proh-
ably $10,000.

Through San Francisco Fire.
Mr. and Mrs. A. l . Deming ,
of this city , were made happy
Tuesday by receiving a lettcr
from thcir daughter-in-law , who
hall exp rienced the earth quake
and fire in San li'rancis o last
week.
It was the first heard from
their son and his wife since the
fire. 'rhey r ceived a letter and
also a postal card conveying the
happy news that ( heir childrcn
were 110t numbered among the
dead.
'l'hey were residing in a frame
huuse in Golden Gate Park near
the beach , fully tcn milcs from
the ferry. 'l'hey accredit their
escape from death to having been
in a framc instead of a brick
house. 'rhe frame gave sum-
cicnt warning before yielding to
the earthquake , for thcm to escape -
cape from the building. A
bric1 { house , only a short { lis-
tance from them , was wrecled
and a number of the occupants
were killed , not being ablc to
escape.
'l'he fire following the earth-
quale prevented Mr. and Mrs.
Dcming from entering the house
to secure their clothing or any-
i thing else and all they had were
burned.
'l'he only hope tor refuge they
had was at Oakland , where 1\lts. :
Deming had a sister residing.
In order to reach there t hey had
to walk and carry their baby a
distance of ten miles thruugh
thc burning district to reach the
ferry boat to cross o\'er to Oalc.

We had a terrible time to get
out and poor Arthur is half cra y
after going through so much.
He brought the baby all the way
through the ruin from the Golden -
en Gate Park to the boat and our
feet are all blistered. We saved
absolutely ; nothing. I ! mve not
even got a hat , came w1th some
man's cap on. Will give JOu details -
tails whcn I am better.
We are with mv - sister , got here
late last night.
