Notwithstanding the claim of the large stock owners ill the northwest or sand hi11s country that the sand hills are not worth homesteading , homesteads are being filed at a greater rate than they have an } ' time since the Kinlaid homestead i11 ! providing - ing for 640 acre homesteads went into effect. I While there is much of the land in question that has but lit. tle valve now , there is but little question but what much of it when put in cultivation by seeding - ing it to alfalfa and broome grass will be valuable 111 time to come. There is scarcely a section ut has some valley land on it that can he utilized from the start for farming and hay. Should the proposed lease bill be passed by Congress it will have the effect to retard settlement - ment and individual O\v.nership. Twenty-five years ago the large cattlemen used thc r utmost ndeavors to discourage home. steaders in Custer county , claiming - ing the land was only fit for grazing. A long and bitter contention prevailed for several years hefore the homesteader - steader gained UIC ascendency- several murders resulted. Where there were then a few large herds of cattle now there are hundreds of smaller herds and prosperous farmers and stock raisers occupy nearly cv.ery section of land in the county. Whit has proven true in Custm' county will prove true 111 the entire - tire sand hill country in the next twenty years. The proof that the sand hill country is desirable is established by the following figures talen from the filings in the Brolen Bow U. S. Another Candidate for Governor. George L. l ouse , of Hall County , Nebraska , announces himself a candidate for governor . subject to the action of the re. publican state convention. Mr. House is a farmer and stockman of Hall county. He is one of the early settlers of Hall county ancl is one of its mostly highly reo spected citizens. Hc was honor. ed with the position of speakel of the House in the last sessior of the legislature , which positior he filled with credit. The RI\PUnIICAN is pleased te see such ment as Messers House 'Vall and Mortesen prominentl ) mentioned as candidates fron : the central west Nebraska f.1 the office of governor. It begim to look as we arc to have a gov. ernor and United States Senntol from western Nebraslm. ORe More Republican on the Count ) Board. . . Work was stopped a few days before on the foul1la- t on for the new roundhouse , and the last was an order to discon. tinue the grading for the new side tracks that had been ordered. " .Just what will he the policy' the Durlington in the future in reference to the 1ivision station at I avel1na , is only a matter of conjecture. Rhould a branch bc extended from Cario to the Sar- gent ranch and that branch ex- tcnded to Dunning as is generally helie\'ed WIll be done 'it would indicate that the division would ' he changed to Dunning. But it is just possi le that as Brokeu Bow is nearer an equal distance hetween Aurora and Seneca that it may yet get the division. Should not the dh'ision comc to Brolccn Bow the town will not be etTcctc1 by the discontinuance of the Havenna division as the traJic through the tcrdtory is of such magnitude that should a branch connect the Sargent branch at Cario and Dunning , it would not divert any of the trafic from the main line as it is a shorter route to Dunning than the branch line would be by several miles. _ 'l'he question of an early and late statc convention is a matter that is just now being generally discussed throughout the state. As there is no special reason why there should be an early convention - tion this year we hope to see a late convention. The last of August or first of Septcmber will gi ve time to make the campaign and we see no reason why a shprt campaign will not be better for all , concerned , I , , It is now declared that lagrippe and many other diseases are traced to unhealthy months , and that even with dyspepsia relief can many times be sccured through the kindly sldll of the dentist. 'rhere seems to be a great deal of common sense in this diagnosis and the work of the dentist is very importatant in securing and kecping good health. Nearly every week brings reports - ports of proposed extcnsion of railroads in this state , and the indications are that the mileage of ' 190 ( , will exceed that of last year. 'l'.his means greatly increased - creased business ; what arc you doing to secure a portion of it ? . - - - - - - ' - - - - - If the railroads stick to the anti-pass order there will be some walking delegates to thc politi. cal conventions hereafter. A goodly number of cithens and baseball cnthusiasts met at the band room and perfected an organization for the season of 1906 by electing George Ii' . Bra ) ' , manager ; Fred Hays , director and 'Walt George , treasurer. Under Manager Bray last year all expenses incurred were fully paid and several accounts left over from the preceding year and all felt that at the end of this season the club will be able to jingle a few IIplunks" in its jeans pocket and likewise ban- quet. Several citizens spoke in favor of vigorously pushing the matter and congregating an aggreation that will put up an article of ball that is the real thing and enthusiastically pledgcd hearty support. Manager Bray says he feels more encouraged to take charge of the matter than he did last year and he wIll at once begin to shake the hopper and sift out some g'ood ball tossers. Every citizen should assist and encourage the formation of the club and Broken Bow will clean up the whole diamond in this part of the state. City Caucul. By an ovcr sight the mattcr of a city caucus has not been published - lished until this week , which makes the time of notice short. But it is ample as the chairman of the committee informs us that he will have the call published in all three of the city papers. As there is to be but one caucus every citizen should plan to attend - tend and assist in selecting the bcst possible candidates for the several positions. Citizen. Caucu. . 'rhe electors of the city of Broken - ken Bow arc hereby called to meet in caucus at the Court House , Mondav evening , March 12 , 1996 , to nominate the following - ing officers for the ensuing year : Mayor , One councilman for 1st ward. One councilman for 2nd ward. One councilman for 3r ward. City treasurer , City clerk , City engineer , Police judge. L. I-I. JI\WI\1"1' , Chairman. More Railroad Talk. 'I.'here is always call for a mixture of forage plants to make early pasture for hogs ! something that can be used by the middle of may , and will make a pile of green feed till new corn comes in. I can prepare a mixture - ture specially for this purpose and I know you wIll be pl ascd with the results from it. The basis of it is field peas , barley and oats. To this is added other forage plants such as rape , cane pincillaria , turn ups , sweet corn and othcr quick growing crops. Altogether it makes a succotosh mixture that hogs will thrive on amazingly. I vary the mixture with the season , and for late in summer use cow peas and soy beans instead of field peas. T. S.
