Hon. Norris Brown , whom the
peoplc of Buffalo county have announced -
nounced as a cand t1ate for Unitcd
Statcs SeuatOl' , is a familiar
character in Nebraska where his
ability as a lawyer is known and
where his republican principles
have been fearlessly declared from
the rostrum.
He was born at Maquoketa ,
Iowa , May 2 , 18)3 , attended the
public school , graduated from
the University of 10wa , studied
law and was admitted to the bar
in Iowa , October 1 , 1883. He
practisec1law at Perry , Iowa , until -
til April 28 , 188H , when he moved
to Kearney , Ncbraska , where he
has since wresided and practiced
law. In 1885 he married Lucile
H. Beeler , and has two daughtcrs
in the Lincoln High School. In
181)8 he ran for Congress against
Congressman Greene , and in a
series of joint debates with that
accomplished orator attracted attention -
tention as a public speakcr.
Mr. Brown was county attorney
of Buffalo countT for two tcrms ,
and dcputy a torncy gencral for
four years. In a single year as
attorney gcneral he defcat d two
great rail way corporations in the
federal court and savcd the state
over $300,000 in taxes ; crushed
tIle Nebraska gralI ! trust in a
suit in thc supreme court , thus
securing the only competition
among grain dealers in Nebraska
since 1896 , and saving the farm.

all grain sold. amounting to more
than S2,000,000 in a year , triumphed -
umphed in a case in the supremc
court rcquiriug foreign insurance
companies to pay into the state
trcasury reciprocal taxes amount-

suit brought by thc sugar trusts
to recovcr from the state S40,000
in bounties.
