" . . . . . , ; . : . . : : : - - - - - .Bee . C'ulture in Nebraska. An Interesting Paper'IRead' at the Farmers Institute by Mrs. A. Lo Amos. l or nearly fourteen .years I have been lCeping bees with varying success in Custer county. When I commenced there was 110 one to give me any encouragement - ment or le.nd a helping hand. I had been told the "Bees would not do well in Nebra ka , " that HThere was not eliough for them to work on , " etc. However , I am quite a hand to want to try for myself-buH- headc ( I have been told b ) ' the individual most free to give home thrusts I I can say that the prospects , for the ee } ( ecper in Nebraska have steadily improved since I made my first attempt , and I have also learned much in the costly schC'ot of experience. I am an advocate of farm bee keeping. Not that I think the farmer should vie with the specialist - ialist in the field of agriculture and burden himself with more ! than he can manage. Two or three colonies make but little work and should afford honey - ey for his table the year rounel. Ordinarily this goes to waste in h is fields for lac1 < of bees to gather - ther it. Why should this be so ? A recent - cent writer in the li'armer's Voice sars that the farmer used to be a bee leeper. If that be so , it seems a strange' falling away' ' from a comme.n lable practice , for certdnly bee } { eeping was never easier than it is today. I have noticed the prevalent idea that I'Bees would not do well in Nebraska. " 'fhen there is the natural dread.of ! 'ttings. It is said , , vith what truth I know not , that the poison of the bee's stings is a specific for rheu matism. 'l'hat ought to be some comfort under aftliction. Besides that , the Italian bee is very gentle and not at all like the irrascible little black rascals 'of the time of our grandfathers. Then too , there are many who do not realize the great value of honey as a food and as a medi- cine. They don't have the honey habit. We are told on ail hands , "Uneeh biscuit" and invited to "Try.a-bite" food and cautioned what to smoke ut there have not becn many to urge the value of honey. If people in general ra te it at its true worth the present - ent supply would not e enough to go around. It would r place some of the pat nt medicines of more than doubtful virtue for the treatment of coughs , colds , 10. grippe etc. 'l'he medical profession are generally - erally agreed that honey is the mo' wholesome , sweet , as it is ills ) , the'most ancient , and can he freelv eaten in certain jis- cased c nditions of the body when sugar is for idden aR an arlicle of diet. It iR usually much relished hy children and is suita le also as a food in extreme old age. To the honey lover it is not generally consideration of the a. bove facts but simply its delic. iousness and its comparative rarity - ity that leads him to indulge. It is much cheaper than it use ( ] to be and while bee keepers may lament that the day of higl ] prices is passing , if they tl.inli at 0.11 of "the other fellow" they will not regret the fact that they can not got 25 cents a pound fOI their product. "How to Manage Bees , " ma ) be partly learned from the main excellel1t instruction books ant papers published in regard to be ( keeping ; but , after all , there i so much dilTerence in locality , : have had to learn many thing : for myself. I have decided that at least enl cause for failure in Nebraska i lhh , : Our best nat'ural honey How i in lhe fall , bringing with it lat. . swarming , which , if unchecked il ) ' also excessive. 'l'hen there i o ten failure in such cases t , gather sufficient stores for wit1 t , f , as was the cas last fal ] there is a cessation of bone gathering earlier tban usuaj followed by an open winter when the ees fly freefy , consumiug I their stores before there is an- thil1g more for them to gather , wbell they starve. 1'he strongest cJlonies that are left are often allowed b ) the careless bee keep. er to hunt the icy' water in the stock tanks , c1ulling to death , when the bee k eper will s y he had a case of "Sprin , ! d wind- liug' . " ' 1'0 put it in a nut-sbell : If the colonies winter through with abuudance of food and ar'c supplied - plied with artificial pollen and water close by they arC' likely to be in good condition when fruit lo01l1 comes , and if there is nectar - tar to gather they will repay whatever care has been given them. Broken Bowite. in La. Angle. . A letter received the first of the week from.P.
