Criminal Libel Suit ,
II. J. Shinn , the late populist
can idate for connty jndJc , ha
cOll1menced criminal libel suit I
against J. R. l hodcs formerJy
county judge.
'l'hc suit grew out of an articl
that appearcd in the Chrouiclc.
CI tizcll , which is alJeg 11 Hho es I
is the author. The complaint
was fil < < : d yestcrday 1\1 the office
of Justice E. G'Schwind and the
warrant was sen'cd on Rhodcl'
while in the city settling up the
Curtis cstate.
Mr. Hhodes prescntcd himself
to J us lice G'Sch wind and was
put under his own recogbmn to
appear on the 8th da ) ' of January
for the preliminary trial. There
has not been the best of frend-
ship existing betwecn Shintt ami
Hhodes for eigh t or ten years.
Eight years ago when Shinn was
nominated for county judge by
the populist convcntion , Rhodes ,
who was a delegate to the convention - .
vention openlv charged in the
, convention th t Shinn was n defaulter - . ,
faulter or words to that etfect..J
-
. . , . . . .
an demanded that his namc be
withdrawn from the ticket.
Shinn remained on the ticket
and was defeated. We understand -
stand that the article now complained -
plained of is one which referred
to the old charges. As the suit
is for criminal1ibel instead of a
civil suit for damages the county
attorney will prosecute at the ex-
pensc of the county.
