As yet we IHH'e seen noticc of hut enc mem- h'r of the legislaturc , w40 has rcturned his pass to the railroad compan ) ' . 'I'he record of the Il'gislature last winllir along railroad - road legislation was not mlch as to inspire us with the : hope that : In } ' better results could he ex- ( J\cted on those issues were the legislature con\'cnell in extra session. Wc would suggest that the question of railroad legisla- I tion be deferrcd until the pcople have another opportunity to choose their represcntatives. Some Good Thoughh Suggested by T. C. H. Bayerhoffer. Sometimes we come to trying times in politics and wonder if thcy are ( ! c\'oid of idcals. We see parties gather in convention , pass \'cry fair rcsolutions , nominate - nate some oed men. ' ! 'hen comes upon us the idea that the man hehind the gun can be e\'erv- ! . thit1g' in war , why not the man. bchind the candidates in politics ? 'Phi ! ' ; reflection raises the ques- tion , why wcrc thesc men nomi- natcd ? And herein lie. . the clOl1l1 which throws a shadow ovcr the patriotic heart. III looking through a ticld nominated to the controlling passion beyond we too oftcn sc , the meaner trails in man pre- dominate. WI see patriotism mockcd and virtuc insulted. Hcre too our most sarrect dutie arc trealed so flippantly that man ) ' an otherwi"e ooll man simply "slands in' for th salce heing called a good fellow , and to fustcr a trilling ambition. Bllt has thc man who mo\'es thc pol wnq rca lIy foolcd t he people ? I 1I11nk not. And yet thc'iU . generally vote for the tickc.t. . Itlools distracting' , hut still there are ethics in po1itic . Thcre is a ccrtain c ers \'eness in rcpuhlican institutions which often mal ( s men act againsl their hctter jtlllg'cmcllt. It is muler t he lr : > s of such circumstances - stances that m.tn'-3 conduct often belics his in er and nobler self. 13 tt the mosl despisable politician - cian is qllite a anxiou \ a \ the pnrcst statemtln : : to present to thc \'oting Pllblic an excellent platform. And so , although the motivc is'ery diiTercnt thc result is Illuch the samc-a recognition anll culli\'atiull of hteah. in the pcople. ' 1'1I1I iL com S to pas that th meam employed by thc corrupting elcmcllt becomes a sourcc of Pllritkaliun and re- g-cllerttioll. Whcnc\'er men of good character - ter and ability arc placcil ili nomination'the fact is especially exploited and in this way the generat morality and character of the ommunit\ elevated. 'l'hc fact that thcse men oftcn lacl , in true manhood and montl courage and so are mcre t gure- hcads in a way , does nut blot out the sustaining clTect of thcir more apparent ( llH\lities. So too the man who uU'die I , , . I himself in b h'alf ' of an appealing platform may 'rest assured that . his labors strike home to the . heart of the community by their exalting influence upon the public - lic ideal. lIe may not make dollars out of public affairs , he inay becomc the laughing stock of vulgar manipulators-wise gl1 ys , but despi te it all he touches a vital spot of the nahonal liTe with hene ( cence. And hc has the consciousness of services rcndered which will in time bear the begt kind of fruit for all con- ccrned. Lct us then still be hopeful an do the best we can. Decay is essential to reorgan- i ati'on and reconstruction. As rotting clements fertilize an in- ditTerent soil , so too well polluting - ing influcnces in politics ge ! l1i- natcs and 110urishc an upbUlld- ing' and upliftlng reaction. Political - litical cl11 es r ficct the morality of the citizenship. And the elevation of politics can best be I accomplished by cu1th'ating I hi , hcr and purer ideals in the I indi\'idual. ' 1'0 the young.-the rising generation-l would mpecially rccol11mend the cultivation of . honesty and the con tern pIa tion of ideals. Not for the salcc of . wealth in money , not for praise. or glitter , but for thc satisfaction of you\ ' own conscience , for the calm and purity of ) 'our own soul. I . 'rhe consciousness of having I ( nrle right , the knowing that tQu ha\'e rende d honorable . sen'ice to your fello\vmen \ makes. . room in your beart' for an extacy of fceling unknown to the greedy seltish and narrow mindN1. Hypocracy will not avail e\'en on earth. : Sah'ation comes trom within ; monc\ ' , place , power , all , cannot buy it : 'l'here is hut one redemption betwecn man and Omnipotence , \ ' z : conduct and thought-your life ! , , . - - - ' - The Din-ct Prillll\lY. 'l'he qucstion of primary elections - tions of township , county , state , congressional and senatorial candidatcs is a matter the republican - lican state ccntral committee has now undcr. adsement for next year. The republican state convention - tion held recently at Lincoln , enders - dors d the plan and requcsted the next legislaturc to pass a law governing a direct primary. 'l'hcre wcrc some who objected I to the plan in the legislature last - - winter flOm the sparsely settled districts on the grounds that I sufficient interest would not be : . taken to call out a repre entat'e vote. But the same doubtless is true in such localities in holding caucuse and conventions. We see n' reason why after a year or two , at most , there would not be a greater interest in a direct primary - mary than there now is In the caucus. The bill introduced last winter had some objectional features , but that does not argue that a good law on that quc'ttion can . nut he made. It will he diredly 'in ' the interests of the peopl if properly framed. Bon.V. . J. Bryan and Family Start on Long Journey. Col. 'V. J. Bryan , who is ac- I companied by Mr . Bryan , their son William and daughter Grace have started on ther : trip around the world. 'rhev were to sail from San Francis o yesterday for Japan by the way of Honnolulu. When the ) ' reach Japan' th will be accompanied by Y. Bryan- Yamchito , the young Japaneese student , who graduated ae\ the , State University. IIe lh'e'd with I thc Bryan's while here and adopted - ed W. J. Bryan as his Godfather and took upon himself the namc of Bryan. He is now married and is teaching school in 'rokio. I From Japan the tourists will go to China and from' there to the I Phi1'ipincs , but "Yam a" will only accompanv them through his native land , India , Autrllia : , New cland , Egypt , Gre , Palest me , Germany , Norway , Sweedcn and Switzerland will be visited by them while gone , as well as all Europe. 'l'hey have not limited their stay but expect to be gone from enc to two years. - - - - - We are reliably informed by one who was there , that there were but fifteen counties represented - sented in the populist state con- ven tion , by t wen t.eigh t del - gates , Aftcr organhdng they adjourned to hear Br'an , speak at the democrat convcntion , They selected one of the candidates for regents and let the democrats have thc rest , A democrat who was present informed us that Bryan did not so much as mention - tion the pops in his speech and that se\'eral of those who had formerly been leaders in the pop party returned home withont goinguack to the pop conven- f tion. This would indicate tl : t , the democrats have ! left but a , J ( very small remnant of pops in the Htate , most of them have been swallowed by the whale. State 'rreasurer Mortensen's name has been added to the list of those who ha\'e returned their passes. When a thief broke into - to the treasurer's house and stole hi. annuals and some other valuables - ables , Treasurer Mortensen noti- tied the railroads of the theft of r the pasteboardS1. The roads so notilied renewed them. In the meantime the republican state convention had adopted a plank dec1aring railroad passes to be detrimental to the interests of the people and then Treasurer Mortensen promptly returned the passes with his compliments. 'l'he state officers who have returned - turned their passes are Governor J II. Mickey , Attorney General Norris Brown , Land Commissioner - er II. M. Eaton , State Superintendent - tendent J. L. McBrien and Auditor - tor 1 . M. Searle.-State Journal , " - It is now to be seen whether the democrats will stay by their colors or take the : !
