" No one can cross the West j- . . Table at this season of the year \ from the south-cast to the torth- ) r west without being struck with 1 the grandcur f that Vail ! plain , I. . It was our pleasurc to' pass over that great agricullural di trict thc latter part of last weck on our way to Arnold. We notc thc contrast , with thc , " first time we traversed that vast table twenty-five years ago. 'J'hen there wa5 not a house or a human being to be seen. Not a foot of that fine land had been home-sh aded and the texas cattle - tle and ijroncho roamed it at will. Now every foot of it is utilized. 'l'he landscape is one Ulac1 , sea of waving corn , interspersed with a field of oats , wheat , r'c or barley /W / : here and there to break the manE - , E otomy. Fine houses and barns , J towering windmills , fine roves , aad orchards are in evidence in : every direction as additional evidence - : _ dence of the thrift and intclli- , . i' . gence of the pioneers wholocatcd . . there to build hOI11 s amI fortunes - I es for their families. . Those who own hut a quarter Ir. section of that ( 'dcn of Custer k counly are xceptions rather t' ; ' than the rulc. . There IS Uncle Jake Klump who ' I owns . all that joins him. I 1 : . Scores of others are constantly . : adding to thcir posscssions as op portuuity presents itself. 'l'here 1 , is Chal. Dlackeman , John Wehe- : liug , Chas. Z'aclcery , Will Shaad , besides many othcrs who are COll- stantl\ ' reaching out for more i - I room. I 'l'he progress and prosperity that has marlccd that section in the last faw } 'cars is man'elous. We chanced tO'stop a Jr ; 1"omc of Will Shaad Saturday to feed and water our team , who but few years ago was a lone bach- elor. In viewing his fine grove an uearing fruit trees , along willi his fine hcrd of polan china hogs , wc were led to malce some inquiry - quiry as to what advancement he had made , We knew that some fourteen or sixteen years ago 'he had married one of our popular school teachers and we knew that from general appearances th 1t they had accumulated enough to keep them out of Uie poor house for a fcw months at least , 1 > 11t we ! lad not guessed in a mile of the real facts. Ue told us that he had but , recently - cently shipped a car load of hogs to Omaha that netted him over $1)00. lIe haR nether car load that will bc ready for market ijl a month and another car leI I that will be ready in two more months. He told us one car of , cattle he shipped that averaged ' I h 1 $103 a hcad. Hc " had just I added another 160 acres of laud I to his possessions that'joined hutt n the south to provide more room. He now has 6 0 acres in a body of that fine land' , nearly 100 " head of cattle , twenty four head of horses , hcaded by tt $1000 stallion - lion , pasture and fattcnings . perfs . full of hogs and he already raIses . eno gh fruit to supply.tlH family .A bright family of 'children , "a noble wife and mothct : to preside ovcr the home. : .Shch have'been ' the possibilities of Custer county aml there is.still gr at opportuU1ties for young men 'of industry and honesty.
