UEW 'YORK. : .s. - - ' " " - ' - - a.r'sbyte a- - ; : ' . - - I -1 Monda } ' morning u fewminnt s before 5 o'clock the Presbyterian church of thiil ! city was discovered on fire by Mrs. Chas. Scholtz , who was up carly putting on her I wash watt'r. Mr. and Mrs. Scholz gave the alarm ut once to the neighbors and thc c ntral ( elephone office , Linn Douglas who was attending central rang ' the fire bell and the alarm became general. Owing to the early hour some ot the fireman were little tardy in arriving at the scene of action , but as the fire had gotten under good head way and was extending - : tending out of thc roof on the east end there was but tittle chance to do much , but prevent the fire from extending to the parsonage on the north and the Sehol : ' . building on the west. Fortunate there was very little wind which lessened the danger to the surrounding buildings. . The cause of the fire is a mys- t'ery , there had been no fire in the furnace since Friday night . and only a little fire in the stove i'n the lecture room Sunday night. As RelIitchel was sick the regular Sunday services had been dispensed witb. Tbe generally accepted theory of the cause of the fire is that a lamp must have been left burning in tbe lecture room and exploded , as thc fire started from tbat part of the building instead from the west where the furnace was located. The fire company deserves. great credit for tbeir heroic efforts under disadyantages although they failed to save the building. The loss was complete not even the music booles were not saved. Among the rest were two organs and a library wbich burned. It was a severe loss to the ch urcl1 as well as the citj' . As it was large comodlous building witi Incline floor seated with open chairs and otherwise well fur. nished. But recently the churcl bad paid the last indebtednesi after years of struggle. 'rhj estimated loss is $5000 and ai material and labor are tUuc1 higher than when the huildinj was built it is doubtful whethe it can be replaced for that amount 'rhe church has the Hympath or the community in the greD loss sustained. The building was insure { ( . $2000 , which will be a great hel in rebuilding. CoUCJlC Nuw. . . Vic Lowrv has his throat tic up , he sayslts quinsy. Granville Rapp spent SundD at his home in Berwyn.
