Senator Durkett.
' 1'he house and senate in separate - '
ate sessiol19 Tuesday cast 118
vote for E. J. Burleetl for United
Statc senator , lJ fol' Metcalf of
the WorlrJ Heraldl 1 for 80l'cscn
and 1 for Douglas , 'l'he cntire
republican strength of hoth houses
of the lcgi lature was cast for Mr.
Uurketl with the cxc ptiong of
Mukcn and 'l'ucker of Omaha.
' { 'he fusion crowd of ninc united
011 Metcalf of the World Herald ,
Mr. Burkett will succeed Senator
Dietrich March 4th. 'rhe vote
of the two branches of the legislature -
lature was ratified yesterday 111
joint session. The effort of the
opposition news papers to prejudice -
dice the public against Burkett
charging he was the choice of
railroads will have but little effect
\Vitli those who are posted. There
proQably never was a senator
elected from any state-freer from
corporate influence than Elmer
J. B rkett. He commenced his
campaign a year ago with the
view of submitting his candidacy
to the vote of the people. The
republican state central commit-
.tee requested that the counties
IJass upon the question of
submitting the questiou of U. S.
senator to a vote of the people.
Nearlyevery republican county
convention passed resolutions en-
dprsing the plan , and alar ge
number of the counties endorsed
the candidacy of Burkett. The
only counties that did not , were
charged with being under corporate -
porate influence. 'fhe state con.
vention both endorsed the plan
and endorsed Mr. Burkett's can-
didacy. His name was placed on
the ballot and he received a very
large majority of the votes cast.
There was nothing left for the
legislature to do but to carf , } ' out
the expressed wish of the votes.
The issue was practically settled
at the polls last November by the
people , and not by any corporation -
ion or clique. Mr. Burkett has
served three terms in congress
from the first district in Nebraska
and his election is due to his abU ,
it ) ' and popularity with the vote
of the tate. He is a native oi
,
Iowa , a graduate of the ! 'abOl
college and is in his 37th year.
