telegrapic news that Howard Penn
bad committed suicide , at York.
For several years he had been in
the employ of bis brothcr , W. H.
Penu & Co's. clothing store of
this city. He had quit work enl
l\londay previous and ort 'rhurs-
day morning left for Lincoln accompanied -
companied by Mrs. A. J. Stevens.
lIe returned that night to York. .
and registered at the Blodget
betel , Mrs. Stevens returned to
York t e next morning to get her
boy who was there in th6 convent.
He and Mrs. Stevens met in the
parlor of the hotel and arranged
to leave for Lincoln 011 the afternoon -
noon train where they were to be
married that evcning. As Mrs.
Stevens' boy had left York and
come to this city after she left
, and was to return on the next

train , sbe went down to the depot -
pot unaccompanied to meet hc
boy with the understanding that
Howard would take the train and
all three go to Lincoln. As there
was a large crowd at the depot
and Mrs. Stevens was anxious t
. meet hel' boy to have him go with
them , she did not think strang
that she elid not see Mr. Penn' ,
supposing he would be on the
train.Vhen shc saw him last he
secmed to be in the best of pirits
and in no way irritated that he
premediated self dcstruction. .It
was about 1 o'clock when she was
at dinner a report was heard in
the , hotel that was subsequently
supposcll to l1e the fatal sho't.
