The U ( I and 11. & M. Rallro lt HI'MIRt
Tl1 lr TAXn.
Not a few of thc voters of the
state as well as se\'eral in Custer
county were made to believe by
lhe demo-pop newspapers of thc
state in the recent campaign that
the new revenue law'w s made
in the interest of corporations
and that in fact , that J. N. Baldwin -
win attorney for the U. P. rail-
r9arJ and Chas Manderson of the
'C. n. & Q. road ha\ \ drawn or
dictated the bill in the interest
bf the corporations Unll was passed -
ed by the republican legislature
two ) 'ears ago.
So strong was this elief that
they combined with the corporation -
tion to defeat ( ; 0Mickej' because -
cause he had recommended a new
re\'cnue law and appended his
signature to the bill when 'it
reached him tbus making it a
law. But those who read may
now se tbeir folly and no doubt
will know more next time tban to
put any confidence in the campaign -
paign falsehoods of the World-
Herald , and "me too" sheets like
the Beacon who so lavishly draw
on their immaginations for campaign -
.

.Both the U. P. and'.B. ' & M.
railroads had notices ser\'ed on
W. A. George , county treasurer
of Custer county as well as every
other county treasurer through
which these roads pass , requiring -
ing them to appear 1efore Judge
: \Iunger of thc U. S. 'circuit court
of Omaha the first Monday in
J auuary and show why a permanent -
ent injunction should not be issued
prohibiting them collect'ing the
count ) ' taxes agamst. said companies -
panies , in excess of 20 per cent
of thcir taxes in 1902.
Tbls action of theirs not , on y
refuses the claim made by thc
dcmo-pop p pers that the republican -
lican legislature and governor
were dominated by the corporations -
ations , but establishes the claim
made by the RRl'UUI.ICAN in the
campaign that the fusion candi"
date for e-overnor and the pop and
democratic parties were in league
with the corporations. Had
Berge and a pop legislature bc n
elected the revenue law would
have been repealed and tbe corporations -
porations ha\'e gained a victor } '
o\'cr the people. The fact t1 at
thc demo-pop central committee
sent S300 to the pOI' central 'com- :
mittee of Custer county to use in 1
the campaign is another evidence
that the corporations were backing -
ing the fusion crowU. 'Money
was lavishly sent 1.0 every county
in the state , where thcre was a
possible chance to defeaf. the republican -
publican candidates for the
legislature. Did the pop

Phil. Carupbcll came in 'rues-
day morning from Gran Island ,
where he had attended a meeting
of the Grand Island Commercial
Club in the interest of the proposed -
posed elcctric railway froUl
Grand Island to Gand ) ' . The report -
port at the meeting shows that
six of the townships through
which the road would pass'would
vote bonds to their fulllimitS70-
000. Nearly all the townships
report\d that individual stock
would be subsl'ri ed. It is now
proposed to organize a stock
company at Grand Island and
take in all along the linc who
will talc stock. It is now I1P to
the people along the proposed
route to sa ) ? whether their desire
for the road is strong enough to
take hold and build.it. . . As Mr.
Campbell now puts it , "it is up
to the people. " It takcs money
to build a railroad , and now is
tIle opportunity.
