Hi nsh a w , congr.essman , received
thc largcst plurality ever given
a candidate tor congress in all
Ute state. In that parttculary
we think the correspondent for
the Journal t mistaken. Hin-
shaw's plurality was only 7,705 ,
while Congressman Kinkaid of
this district , received a pluratiiy
of 8,855 , which i.s 1,150 greater
plurality than was received by
Mr. Hinshaw.

best thing for us , the outh , to
do , is Cor Judgc Parker and the
dcmocratic executive committee
to request the southern electors
to cast thcir v tes for President
Roosc\'eH and make his election
unanimous. He is a good lOaD ,
half southern , and we of the
south ought to be able to trust
him. " ' ] 'hosc arc bra vc words to

I If we remember aright a count ) '
polling eighteen hundred votes is
entitled to a clcrk of the district
L court , and such an office will undoubtedly -
: doubtedly be created in the count -
: t ) ' in the neal' future.-Ord Quiz.
I 'l'he memory of the Quiz puts
: the figures a little high as tbe
. law provides for a clerk oC the
: District court when thc vote
I reaches 1600 or a population of
8,000 but the legislature made a
mistake when it put the figures
I so low. As there are not offices
, enough to go around every county -
ty takes the first opportunit ) to
. provide for filling an office that
the law provides , without stopp-
1 ing to count the cost. When
- the otlice of county c1er1 ( has
- combincd in it the office of Clerk
, of the Court and Register of
:1 : Deeds the office is a source of
revenue to the county. In other
words the receipt of fees more
than pay the expense of the
office and a'surplus is turned OVCI
to the county general fund. But
I , when ) 'ou tale away the fees in-
11 cident to the office of the clerJ (
o of the court and Hegis er of
d Dee ls as . done in Custer
e county and the salaries of the
principlal and deputies are more
than the receipts of the three
ofiices and the county i ! ' compeU-
e to nnke up the deficiency.
Under , the present law the deputies -
ties of the three oftices receive
$1,000 each , besides the $1,500 ,
received b"each , of the principal.
For the principal and thc I
depuhes it takes $7,500 annuallj' .
o The county clerl ( with a deputy
: r and three clerks at a salary oj
$500 a . year would do the worli
, that is.being done by the three ;
y otlices in a county with 20,000 01
e 25,000 population. This 'wou1 < 1
ilea'e a surplue of $3,500 a ) 'eal
to turn into the general fund ,
r- saved from the salaries now paid ,
