Ollldl'll Wedding.
li'riday night of last week , Mr.
and Mrs. Geo. Purcell of this
city celebrated their Golden
Wedding. They reccived their
invited guests at the Opera
House which had been elabornt-
ly and handsomely decorated
for the occasion.
Between three and four hundred -
dred invitation had beeu sent
out. While Ute ) ' extended to all
parts of the countrj' the great
majority were in the vicinity of
Brok n Bow. The attendance
. was fully three hundre .
' ! 'he hall was cleared of chairs
and the floor liberally covered
with rugs for the recei\'ing hour ,
the arrangement being very convenient -
venient and pleasant for an informal -
formal reception.
'l'he aged bride and groom ,
stationed at the front end of the
hall , next to the stage , ' asstisted
by their son , W. G. Purcell and
wife and Mrs. Root , Mrs. Purcells
sister , extended a hearty hand
shake to all who extended con-
gratulations. 'rwo punch bowls
convenientl ) ' located and each
presided over by young ladies
were liberall ) ' patronized during
the reception.
On entering the hall Alpha
Morgan , Mesdames Morgan , Ed.
Purcell and others received the
guests and directed them to the
cloak room in the back of the
hall which had been partitioned
off by curtains for the occasion.
Eor Uti hour or more n genial
and social time was enjoyed , ull
enjoying the hap'py event only as
a jolly Nebraska crowd can.
The informal receptIOn having
ended chairs were brought in and
the audience was seated in a
semi-circle around the platform
to witness the program prepared
for the occasion.

on light refreshments were served. ]
'L'he program was interesting -
ing and vcry much appreciated ,
the ollly criticism being that the
program was too lengthy , as it
took until 1 o'cloc1 to complete
it.
Mr. nud Mrs. Purcell were the
recipltent of a large number of
presents , part of which were dis-
playell 011 the ! \tage' during the

a complete list of the preHcll1s or
the names of the donor1 , ! mfiice

prisc both ornamental and useful
articles , many of high value.
Among' the articles were a
gold framed settee and gold up-
holsten d chair , the two costing
about S50. While these were
probably the most expensive
articles in the way of furniture
thcy convey an idea of the class
of the prescnts received and in a
degree express the high apprccia-
tion of the community of this
most estimable couple.
'l'he guests were each provided
wi th a sou viner in the shape of a
gold emhossed card containing
the pictures of the bride and
groom 011 their wedding day
fifty years ago and one of them
at the present time. The card
also contained the programme
of the evening. It was a very
pleasant c\'ent and oue long to be
remembered with pleasure by all.

what may be thc damage hefore

\Vhile some fires are the result
of accident , too often they are
through carelessness. l'requen-
tly parties riding aloug the road
will throw ( own a burning" matcher
or stub of a cigar from which
the grass is ignited.
'l'uesday a fire was started near
the Steadry School .house south
west of town on the Callawa ) '
road which doubtless was the result -
sult of carelessness. Fortuna tely
parties were near plowing fire
guards and saw it in time to prevent -
vent its spreading to any' great
extent. But about 100 acres of
pasture was burned over that
might ha\'e been quite valuable
before spring to the owner.
Some three fires were started
last fall in the vicinity of Frank
Weissenreders pasture and west
of there that evidently originated -
ed from some one's carelessness.
One of them not only burned
over a large territory but burned
a large quantit ) " of hay.
