S. \Varrick and family left
this morning on 41 for Alliance
where they wIll reside in the
future. Mr. 'Varrick informs us
that he has not disposed of any
of his interests here , and that he
does not intend to. His only reason -
son for moving to Alliance is to
have personal supervision of his
banldng interest there. lIe will
continuc to spend Monday and
Tuesday of each week to asgist
Mr. Kimberling , who has charge
of the bank here and at Merna.
Mr.Varrick expresses the highest -
est appreciation of the people o'f
Broken Bow a11d vicinit ) . and of
the kind treatment rC'ceive < 1
while among us.
'l'he action of the ratlroad itr
resisting the tax assessment imposed -
posed by the state board last
spring is a tolerabl ) ' efTective
answer to the charge made so
frequently by tbe fu ion press
dun.ng the summer that the corporations -
porations own thC' republican
state administration , body aud
soul and brceches. 'l'he fact is
now apparent that the boarc1
reached a uew decbion as to the
value of the roads without much
reference to the wishes of the
agents and managers who importuned -
portuned the members for two
months to leave the old figures
substantially unchanged. A careful -
ful estimate was made of the
physical value of tha properties ,
thcir earning power and the market -
ket quotations of their stocks
and bonds. 'rhe board was criti-
cised for the deliberation with
which it did this wor ] " but the
time was not lost if the assessment -
ment must he dcfended in the
courts. The more thoroughly
the board went into thc matter
then , the eaiser will it be to defeat -
feat thIs assault npon the workings -
ings of Hlc revenue law.-State !
