'l'he Teachers Institute of a
thrce weeks session closed last
Friday. 'fhe total enrol1ment
was 239. The attendance WdS
larger than reported from either
of the three Junior Normals , held
at North Platte , lIoldrcge and
Alliance. III spealdug of the
institute , Prof. Hawthorne says
that he had helped conduct three
or four Institutes in the county
and five or six summer schools
and that this was the best one of
them all , and that the teachers
are to congratulated on having
the opportunity of attending an
up-to-date Institute in every par-
ticulur. lIe compliments his
co-laborers very highly and Superintendent -
perintendent Lewis on having
planned so succes ful an affair.
The closing of tha Institute
was a very happy event. It con-
sisted of an entertainment by the
Lotus Glee Club of New York.
'l'hose who were priveliged to
hear it , say it was the finest
musical and literary entertainment -
ment evcr given in Broken Bow.
' .rhe club had been at Lincoln
under contract with the Christian
Endeavor Society and were on
their way west which made it
possible to secure them for this
place for the modest sum of $100.
Every number rendered was
worth the admission fee of 50
cents. They were encored from
one to three times on each selec-
tion. 'l'he elocutionist was
sublime.
1g Yield or Oats.
Chas. 'Vachter on the East
Table near Merna , began threshing -
ing his sixty acre field 01 oats
last Saturday , which was turning
out 90 bushels to the acre. 'Ve
said two weeks ago that the
farmer in Custer county that had
not raised a crop worth $1,000
this season was the exception
rather than the rule. If oats
continue to yield at that pace we
will have to double our estimate ,
excepting only the hailed dis-
trict.r.rhink of 90 bushcls to
the acre on 60 acres at 22 cents a
bushel , the present price of oats ,
$1,188 for the oat crop alone.
