"Why Should Womun Wlsb to Yotel"
Answered.
All the ques tions asked by
Leila in the RUPUDI.ICAN of May
5th , have been irrefutably answered - -
swered long ago , but as one wakes
.
to consciousness of the question ,
he needs must ask them for himself -
self , and over and over again
they must be patiently answered.
As Mrs. Catt says , "Yes Woman
Suffrage is a chestnut , but an undone -
done chestnut. "
Leila betrays her lack of knowledge - I
ledge on the subject of Woman
Suffrage in her concluding remark -
mark , "If women want to run
the government they should be
compelled to defend it in war. "
Women does not want to "run
the government , " neither is she
willing that man should "run it"
exclusively , and as for defending
her government , women havc
been known to enter active service -
vice , as they are in the Japanese
army , but barring that , will any
. one deny the paxt : pl.ayed by s ch
as Clara Barton , 1U defend111g
one's country ? Yet amid the

present warfare and strife comes
a sweet dream that such will pass
away as civilization advances tea
a higher view of life , and , if
what all the "antis" say about
women is true she is a lover of'
peace and will help to forward
the banishing of war. She says
"to cast all the burdens on
women would be to become like
the Indians and would be a sure' '
sign that the nation is deteriorat.
ing. " She surely will not deny
then , that a nation may deteriorate -
ate if the burden be all upon the
man.
She says "Voting is not so
much of a privilege for a woman
as a responsibility. " This is
just what we Suffragists are contending -
tendingIt would stop the buying -
ing and selling of votes and also
call forth votes from that class of
citizens , who , disgusted with the
"rings and bosses , " have withdrawn -
drawn from politics. When she
says , "in the long run Woman
Suffrage would degrade the na-
tion" she does so in the face of
established facts. Read the accumulation -
cumulation of testimony from
Colorado , 'Wyoming , Idaha , Utah
and New Zealand , and m ny
other countries that are ahead of
the United States , whose women
have proportionally more rights ,
where Woman Suffrage is a fact
and not a theory.
"Women Suffrage would create
a wrong cond i tion since in some
cases both parents would be out
lectioneering for office at the
same time , and what would become -
come of the home. " Is itsuppos-
ed that under equal suffrage people -
ple nre going to loose their fine
sensc of what is right and fitting ;
would a convcntion force nomination -
tion on a can idnte who through
circumstances was ineligihle to
office ?
She spcakes of that myth ical
place "a woman's sphere. " Now
if some one would clearly define
tbe limits of a man's sphere and
a woman's sphere and draw a line
between thcm , one might be excused -
cused for designating to the sexes
their separate duties and qualifi.
cations , hut as It is , the line i

Why should a woman wish to
vote ? Becausc of her 5acrcd responsibility -
sponsibility as guardian of her
children. Because she is a taxpayer -
payer , and would have a voicc in
the use of public moncy. Be-
causc of thc shamc of being
classed with the Indian , the
idiot and the impecile. Because
she would ask for womanhood ,
the crown of progrcss and not
the chains of custom. llecause
she aspires to be equal with the
man "whom she considers good
