Tuesday is an indication that tht'
i terest and principles of the re-

issue with the fanners of Custer
county.
The number of young men sent
s delegates to the cOijnty con-

respective precincts was a noticeable -
able feature in the republican
convention ' 1'uesday. This was
a commendable thing to do.

would 1I0t be able to make a liv-
in on 160 acres as was hcroto-
forc allowed , It is pointed out
that u homestcadcl' , who is ahlc
to take a few cows onto It homc-
stead will be safe from hard
timcs if he w111 ollly be careful
and get all out of the land that
it will pro uce. For instance ,
there are thousands of sections
available that . will give good
pasture to more than 100 head of
cattle.
'rhe settler should at the beginning -
ginning plant out at least tCIl
acrcs of timber. 'rhe government -
ment maintains a plant on the
Dismal river that produces annually -
nually millions of tree plants
adapted to Nebraska , and the
plants can be had for the asldng ,
While tree plallting is not required -
quired , still it must be remcm-
bered that when a seWcr COItlCS
to mal < e final proof he must show
improvement' ) to the value of
$1.25 per aCre , and a nice ten-
acre tract plantcd in trees would
count for a considerable amount
along that line when final proof
is 10 be made , and , besides , the
value of the timber to the settler
could hardly be estimated ,
Settlers should not go onto
thcse lands with the idea of doing -
ing extensivc fanning. 'l'he
plans should be along the lines
of dairying and stock raising.
Generally spcaking , the stock
can graze on these lands abou t
nine months in the year , except
the most sevcrc winters. Settlers
should go into these sections
with the idea of fencing the entire -
tire section into a pasture. Then
inside the pasture run fences
around the small tract' ) suitable
for plowing and 9n these tracts
raise millet , oats , cane for fodder ,
alfalfa and other roughness for
winter feed for cattle.
The dairy business has now
grown to great proportions and
the lands now available under i
this law arc just the kind for
that purpose. The settler who
provides himself with cows can
now by the improved methods
secure a hand separator with
which he can extract the cream
from the milk while it is yet
warm and feed the warm milk to
calves. The cream from even 10
cows will bring in from $20 to
$40 in cash per month , owing to
how well they are cared for , and
this income can be increased by
the number and proper care of
cows. The cream market is well
established and will never become -
come poorer. A thrifty settler
can ordinarly take care of the
stock on the homestead with the
help of his family and find considerable -
siderable time to look after providing -
viding proper sheds and winter
feed for his stock. Thc cream !
tUoney every month meets the I
current expenses and as a general - !
al rule more money can be made i
and mor easily in this way than
by farming , and espe'cially where
a farmer has to rent land to farm.
With families living on each section -
tion , schools , churches and othcr
advantages will soon follow.
"rhe early settlers of this part of
Nebraska who insisted ou buying
n lot of machinery to farm with
were the ones who had to leave ,
while those who raised stock
bave become well-to.do financi-
ally.-Omaha Bce.
