Broltn Bow , : March 21) , 1904.
A meeting' of the deputy assessors -
sessors of Custer Couuty , was
cal1ed by Jlilcs JIaumont , county
assessor , at the cuuty seat on the
above date , for instrnctiousrelat-
iug to their duties. James
Chittick was elected secretary ,
The different items on the
schedules were diRcnssed pro and
con and decided to the satisfac-
tioti of aU , by County Attorney
Humphrey.
Numben ; 3 , 4 , 13 , 15 and 85 on
the schedule are the ouly ones
from which Ilcduction may be allowed -
lowed for bona 1ide debts.
Moved and seconded to adjourn
to 1 p. m.
1:30 : p. Ill. meeting came to
order with Jules Haumont , county -
ty assessor in chair.
I 'l'he discussions were continued -
ed on the different items clear
through the schedule , and the
opinion arrived at , that under
the law , no classification of any
kind of personal property is possible -
sible , but that everything of
value , must be listed at its fair
cash val e , and assessed at 20
per cent of that \'alue. Real
estate assessment was discussed :
Classification of real estate was
found to be undesirable and impracticable -
practicable under the law and it
was decided that every piece of
property , should be considered
by itself , and assessed according
to its value.
Deputies were instructed to use
their best judgement and absolute -
lute impartiality in assessing
property. JAMES CmTTICK ,

J-Itttle Mable Beatrice Johnson ,
daughtcr of P. C. and J 1ia Jo11l1-
son , was born January 28 , 1902 ,
in Custer county , Ne1traska. SlIe
left the cares of this world behind -
hind her for that brighter shore
above , at 10 p. m. , Friday.March
25th , 1904 , after one week's in-
ness with lung fever. 'l'he little
girl was compelled to endure
much suffering before her patient -
ent little soul took its flight.
Her sweet winning ways made
her doubl ) ' dear to her loving
parents , and now that she has
leflthem only the memory of her
fair face and merry laugh remains -
mains to chcer them. while they
linger here awaiting the summons -
mons from on high when they
can meet her where Rorrow and
dC'atlt are unknown.
IIow charming was that louety flower ,
Tho' it bloomed to fade aml die ,
It "itlteted ut an early hour ,
Then sonrcl to God on high.
Of all the tlowcrs it seemed most fair ,
With tint and smile so gay ;
The ob ect of its parcnts care ,
'Tilllt wa'l ! ' culled I1WI\ ) ' .
IIow ardently we lovcd thut one ,
Whom God to us had givenj .
A lovely. smiling little one.
But now she .lwells in Hca\'en.
How oft the lips were prcssed to ours.
Of that angelic form !
But oh ! how swiftl ) ' flcd the hours ,
And we are left to mourn.
What ! mourn ? Becuusc "the 1,01'11 hud
need. "
Of one who was IIis own ;
And from her tcnement of clay ,
IIns frecd our little one.
Nay , better praise God's holy nl1l11l : .
For calling her to rest ;
And spread ab1'Oad our Savior's mune.
Who said that "Su'h arc blessed.
Yct human nature finds it hard ,
Whcn such a tie is broke ;
The thoughts and feelings well to guard
And thank God for the stroke.
But God can all our sorrows heal ,
His grace can well1'eme ;
The anguish that our spirits feel ,
And fill our hearts with love.
As Job , with troubled heart could say ,
So we can say the same ;
"The Lord who took '
giveth , awa ) .
And blessed be His name. "
