A whitc man once called at the house of Unell' LeCoflin and when he was ushcrcd into the parlor introduced himself as.n . friend of the oppresscd gla'CS and who had often heard of Coffins etforts in their bchalf and cxpressed a strong dcsire to enter . into and arrangement with Cotlin in which or by which a numberof slavcs in Kentuckey could be liberated. Uncle Levi , whose foresight was very near as good as his hind sight , soon informed the would be liberator , that he was on the wrong track and IIbl1rking up the wrong sapling , " and laughing in his face Levi told him that he had nothing to do with slavery on the 50uth side of the Ohio River and did not believe in interfering where it existed except by moral sussion. He further informed the apostle of freedom that if persons came to his house hungry and destitute he receivcd and aided thcm ir- respecth'e of cQlor , but that he had no intentioll of engaging in such a plan as the one proposed. 'rhus ended a yery feeble attcmpt at entraping the wary quake.r for it was soon found that Uncle l evi's suspicions were correct and that thc man waR a slnve hold r himself. At another time a man in formed - ed Coffin that he traveled up and down the river a gr ut deal on board a boat and suggested the feasibility of a plan to help to rUll some slavas , but being answered - wered in about the same manncr tlH t the other fellow was. he goon vamosed and se\'eral such attempts were made to catch the old "Friend" but to no avail as he was pretty well up to IIsnuff. " When anyone attempted to play qualer on Levi he could always tell a counterfit bj' the pecular stress he would put on the IIthee" and his failure to get the IIthou" in the right place. Sally , an intelligent woman of rather brown'complexion. belonged - ed to a couple of maiden ladies who lived in Coreington , Ken- tuckey. baving become their property - perty by inheritance. She had been well trained in house work and was a fine cook and hard t beat in the use of the needle. Her husband had been sold away from her when her youngest child was a mere babe , he having belonged to another magter in the neighborhood and wag sold I for a good price as he was an excellent field hand. He was talen to the far south and she never heard from him afterwards. and she was thus left. with five children , all girls. Her eldest. . two girls were hired out bUt the younger ones being too ) 'oung- were left at home with her. Sally wag a good and faithful servant and had ncver suffered the sting of the cruel lash or other abuse. Her mistress probably - bably to Ieep her from takiug advantage of her proximity to a free state often told her that they intended to set tIer free uut this WaS deferred from year to year. Sally often reminded them of their promise without getting any satisfactory reply and began to fee1 that its fulfillment was as she expressed "mighty onsarton" but she had no thought of being liold until her mistress called into the house one morning from th kitchen and told her that she and her three younger .children had been sold. and woull : be taken away that day. She said this struck her likethunderbolt : - , struck her dumb. Slw ; , hnost I fell to the floor but 11t r mistress I did not seem to pity her. When she found sp ech she begged to , be permitted to go and see her two I eldest girls but she was denied 1 even this and her mistress order. ed her to go upstairs to the room where she slept and to pack up her own and her childrens clothes ( ready to start a way with her ne\ . waster. Mothers , in such a cas . would'nt yo look around to find f some way of escape ? Well that . - is just what she did , she climbed out 011 the Kitchen roof through the wiudlHv. then unto an adjoin. iUg" shed roof. from which she' ' slid down to thc ground in the bacle ynrd , thcn ran to the house of widow lady whom she knew to bc friendly , and hastel ) ' told her stor ) ' . ' ! 'he woman. was a mother herself and could understand - stand the distrcs she fell on account - count of hcr children. This whitc woman coucealed SaIlj' in a mfc place thinking that the children would not he taleu unless the mother was found. Sally was soon missed and diligent - gent search was made for her. The news spread rapidly through the neighborhood that Sally had deserted , and a company of men started in pursuit auxiou to capture till' runaway slave. The ) ' searched among the colored - ed people thiuking she had taken refuge tbere. They did not think she was so near her' home and thus overlooked her place of concealment. In the afternoon the widow lady came o\'cr to Cincinnati to consult some of hcr friends whom she knew were abolitio'nists in regard to Sally. \Yilliam Casey a trusty colorcd man was sent for and thi ! : plan was agreed upon. Sally was to be dressed up in men's clothes and taken about midnight .to a point in the upper part of CO\- ington near the mouth of the Licking River Wherl\ Case ) ' waste to meet her and bring her across the Ohio river into Cincinnat ! , - 'l'hirty four years ago whcn I was attending medical lectures in Cincinnati. ouc of 111j' room mates conduc.ted me along the bank of the river where he said many a slave hld ; made his escape from Kentucky to Ohio. I remember - member of thinking of Bliza Harris crossing the ri\'er on the ice and 11 white man helping her up the 110rth bank and praising her for her bra very. Long since I have learned who this Eliza of Uncle 'l'om's Cabin was and shall tell in some future time the circumstances - cumstances that gave a foundation - tion for that part of Mrs. Stowe's story for it was founded on facts. Sally was a small woman and it was with some difficulty that the clothes could be found to fit her. At last a thin suit was found and placed on Sally but it being early in the spring it was rather cool for such clothing. This was mighty risky business both for Sally tUd for her widow and for Casey as well. However. the night was dark and this favored the plan. 'l'hey escaped detection in the town of Covington , and when the north bank of the Ohio was reached they came very near being caught , but got along without and Casey urought. Sally to the house of Uncle 14evi. who then lived in Cincinnati on the corner of li'ranklin and Broadway. Cascy returned home and Aunt Katy told Lcto tale Sally up to the room where their colored hired girl was slccping. whose name was Jane Clark , but first to go and get some clothes ! -mitahle for Sally out of another room. Uncle Levi did as he was hid. but when he took the woman in men's cloth ing' to J aue's room for her to adjust the other suit. Levi told Jane he had brought hct' a bed fellow. . J aue glaucell at them wildly and then co\'erpd up her h.ead. Uucle Levi. who a full of mischief as kitten . i:1' : of flees. spake rather cou1U\anding- \ ly to Jane. " ' { 'hee must talce this. . person in u ( > ll with th ( ' . " " 1 shan't , " he exclullued with- ant uuco\'ering her hcad. "Now Janc , tlon't act ugly. Here I is a bnndle of c10theswhich Aunt Katy said for thee to pllt on him. " By this time Jane caught onto the racket and uncovered hcr head and said. " 'l'hat's no man. You can't fool this chile. " 'rhe first time. a woman was made by taking a rib from man ; this time it Was done by taking It - - . . . - - - - , his clothes olT and l'u ing another - other suit on , and I am willing to belie\'c thcre was a good job donc in both cases , cOlIsidel' ng the matcrial frol11 which th'y wcre made. Nexl morning. whell Jam' had finished Sally's toilet and brought hcr ( lawn to hreal < fast. Hhe had thc appearance of an intelligcnt womall , and while hct' expres _ sioll was intelligcnt. .her count _ enance dcnoted anguish of ht'art. Her friell took her that day to the Anti-Sla\'ery Sewing' Socicty and Aunt Kat ) ' introduced her to the ladies and left her to tell her story. which she did with so much simple eloquence and patho'3 that when shc finished there was not a dr.r cye in the room. Most of the ladies prcsent were' mothers - ers and could sj'mpathize with her. EfTorts were made to gct her childrcn , but without avail. and she was scnt to Cauada without - out seeing her loved littlc ones. Her consuming grief never left hcr. and although one daughtcr finally escaped an reached Canada - ada , but her mother die just before - fore she reached her. So there was never a reun ion of the family on eartl1. Let us cherish the fond hope that in the compensatory mercy of the IIEternal Goodness. " their wrongs will < 111 1)frighted. . I say 11 UN- N\ ' , which it would he if it was not so real in character as it was. On onl' occasion , before the He\ ' . Henry 'Yard Beechcr was < luite as much enthused as he afterwards - terwards became. Fred Douglas was billed to speak in the academy of music in Brooklin. the doors of which did not turn on gold hinges for thc entrance of a colored mau , no matter what his rcputation for oratory was. Howe\'er on this occasion the elite , the educated and the intellectual turned out and the building was filled. In the course of the remarks of the eloquent - quent speaker , he took occasion to refer to an as ertion madc by his friend , Henry 'Vard Beecher. ( for he was a fnend of Douglas , ) in which the former said at a mep.ting a short time beforc. tha t if he ( Beecher ) could by one stroke of the pen abolish slavery at once or bj' waiting twenty-fivc years to so abolish it that it vould redound to the glory of the church he would wait the twenty- fi\'e years. Mr. Douglas said : "I belie\'e my friend Beechcr is entirely sincere in his ideas of this matter. uut if I were a Maryland planter and he were my slave I could with a good ra w-hide tale tbat opinion out of him in fifteen minutes. " There was once a slave sale in Lamberton in South Carolina where a noted anti-slavery man was s topping. Of course he went to see the salc as he had never wit.nessed thal sccnc be- fore. 'l'bis man was very religious - ious and truly conscientious in his belief and 'he here mct something - thing thalmade him think deeper - er than c\'er. A tine specimen of w manhood. nColrlv whitc , was placed on the auc on hlock and the crier or auctioneer aftcr dwt'l1ing at length 011 her good qualities he said sill' was a g-ood Christian , a memuer of the church , a if the grac of ( ; od would add to her price. 'l'hc bidding was lively and "lit. sold for a high pricc to one of the letcheraas. licentious wrc tches who forcibly took hcr away amid her sighs and tears.
