A place of rentlc- zevous was agreed upon and at the appointed time they repaired to it , carrying small bundles of clothes , which they had found opportunitr to carry ont and hidc. In this company was a young man and his intended pride , whom he had succeeded in getting from h r masters place. The ) ' were aided in crossing thc Ohio river by a white friend with whom arrangements had been made to have his boat in readiness - ness at a secluded spot or point on the rh'er. The . masters were soon in hot pursuit , and at one time when they had just crossed a road and et tered a cornfield in the river b ttom the ) ' heard the sound of h rses fcef in the road nearby. Their masters were close upon them. 'rwo or three of the masters w o were ridiqg ahead of the maiil party saw the fugitives and gave the alarm. 'I'he pursures , 15 or 20 , in number rushed into the cornfield and c lled on them to stop or they would be shot down. Some of the slaves recognized - cognized their masters voices aud while they were in the habit of obeying , on this particular oc. casion thought it not wise to de so. I As it was two of the slave mCI1 l reci7ived gunshot wounds , but they all succeeded in outstripping - ing their pursurcrs and after m4ny hardships a colored frieud conducted them to an under. ground depot , where they all rested awhile and then went 011 by two large wgons , traveling by night and hiding by day unti1 they all reached Uncle Levi' depot.
